4. JOHN HENRY³ MARTIN (JOHN HENRY², ABRAM¹) (Source: History of Clarke Co., 234, Family legend has handed down this story. He served 3 years with the Confederacy in Company A, 43 Regiment, Alabama Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Because of this injury, it was necessary to amputate his left arm. His wife, Lucy Jane Autrey Martin, rode a horse from their home in Alabama to Danville, Virginia to nurse him until he was able to be moved and transferred home. She was allowed to go through both the Yankee and Confederate lines to reach him because of the shortage of nurses. After the war ended, John Henry and Lucy Jane moved to the Hopewell Community in Clarke Co., MS. It was here they reared their family and were active in the community. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Hopewell school. Source: Maxine Moore Adams.) was born March 04, 1830 in Lamison, Wilcox Co., AL, and died September 23, 1902 in Clarke Co., MS. He married LUCY JANE AUTREY April 12, 1858, daughter of ABSOLEM AUTREY and MARGARET GARDNER. She was born March 27, 1841 in AL, and died February 03, 1925.
