"Sarah A wife of Jacob Holt Born May 6, 1812 Died Aug 12, 1890 A loved one has gone from our circle, on earth we shall meet her no more. She has gone to her home in heaven & all her afflictions are O're"

Tombstone reading was taken by Maria Holt Aistrop's brother David in the 1970's. In the 1980's the original headstone was removed without permission of a descendant of Jacob and Sarah Holt who now owns the old homestead. The old headstone was destroyed and replaced by modern ones, forever changing History.  Thanks to the records David kept, we have the old inscription. May he rest in peace.

The other land site he owned (for another wife) is now under the river.  He performed baptisms for the dead for several of his relatives as did his mother, who also joined the LDS church.  He traveled extensively as a missionary for the Mormon church, but was excommunicated on April 7, 1859 at the General Conference.

He was a farmer and owned 2 lots of land in Nauvoo, Illinois.  Different wives resided in different homes.  In the 1851 Utah Federal Census, he lists a household of 9 with $500 in real worth.  Benjamin fought in the Battle of Crooked River at Far West when the saints were attacked.

The following information is available in church records at the land office in Nauvoo, Illinois:

He joined the LDS church at an early day and labored as a missionary in Kentucky in 1838.  He gathered with the saints to Missouri where he passed through severe persecutions, and after participating in the Crooked River battle, he, with others, fled to the wilderness in order to escape their enemies.  They traveled through the northern part of Missouri and the southern part of Iowa and finally reached Illinois in safety.

At a political meeting held in Nauvoo in February 2, 1843 Elder Clapp delivered a speech in which he said that Joseph and Hyrum had attempted to take away the rights of the citizens at a late municipal election. Two days later he made a public confession that he was wrong in his accusation.

When Joseph the prophet was arrested at Dixon, Illinois in 1843, and an attempt was made to kidnap him to Missouri, Elder Clapp joined the expedition which rescued the prophet.  Soon after this he departed on a mission to Alabama on which he had been called the previous April. He was ordained and set apart as one of the presidents of the eighth Quorum of Seventy, October 20, 1844, under the hands of Joseph Young and Levi W. Hancock, and set apart as one of the first seven Presidents of Seventies, December 2, 1845 under the hands of Apostles Brigham Young and Heber C . Kimball, Orson Hyde, Parley P. Pratt and George A. Smith.  He came West with the general exodus of Saints from Nauvoo and resided several years in Salt Lake City, Utah.  He moved to Ephraim, Sanpete County, where he had some difficulty with Bishop Warren S. Snow,.  After investigation before the Council of the Seventies, he was dropped from his position and excommunicated from the church April 7, 1859.  He died in California in 1860 with a conviction of the Truth of the Latter-day Saint work.

The last entry for Clapp in the church book of Weisenheim was in April of 1727.  The family made their way to Rotterdam where they boarded the ship James Goodwill, with David Crockett as ship's master.  The ship made a stop in England and then continued to the Colonies.  On September 27, 1727, in Philadelphia, Valentine was one of six in his family group who was a male aged 16 and up who took the oath of fidelity and he signed his name Jorg Valentin Clap.  The signature looks as though Valentine almost wrote his last name as "K"lap, and then changed the first letter to "C" as he wrote to do it the "English" way as his father had done.  The source for this record was the Minutes of the Provincial Council, printed in Colonial Records Vol. III, p. 284

The family settled in the Oley Valley, north of Philadelphia, in what is now Berks County, Pennsylvania.  The rest of their children were born there.

In 1745, Valentine and others moved to North Carolina where land was available for purchase from either the current Lord Granville, or Henry McColloch.  What they found was favorable and they sent word for Valentines brother Ludwig and others to join them.  Tradition says they first settled in the Beaver Creek section of Guilford County.  This area is in the southern one third of the current Guilford County, southwest of Burlington and south of Interstate 40.  Between 1745 and 1771, numerous counties were formed and the boundaries changed with each formation. Valentine became a naturalized citizen on September 22, 1763 in the Salisbury District. Rowan County, North Carolina.

Valentine and his family were members of the German Reformed religion. They worshipped at Low's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where beliefs were similar, until 1770, when political differences reportedly prompted the Lutherans to lock out the Reformed members.  At this point George and Ludwig were instrumental in establishing a church for their own faith at Beaver Creek.

Valentine purchased land a few miles further north near the Great Alamance Creek with a deed dated 1763.  This land was located about two miles north of where the Brick Church is now located.  On May 19, 1773,about five months before his death, for 250 pounds George Valentine deeded 320 acres of land to his son George Tobias.  Valentine may have owned more land and transferred those lands to his other sons who remained in Guilford County.

Johann Jost Klapp, son of Nikolaus Klapp and Elizabeth Potter was born on Aug 09, 1669 in Istha, Hesse, Germany. He died after 1727 in Berks Co., PA. He married Anne Margaretha Stauder about 1701 in Bingen, Palatinate, Germany.

513.

Anne Margaretha Stauder was born about 1673 in Weisenheim Am Berg, Pfalz, Germany. She died before 1731.

Notes for Johann Jost Klapp:

Johann landed at Philadelphia 27 September 1727 aboard the ship James Goodwill out of Rotterdam, with sons George Valentine and John Ludwig and 12 other members of his family.  David Crockett was the ship's master.  A total of 53 Palatine men, age 16 or over took the Oath and signed their names signifying their subscription to the Declaration of Freedom, to include Joseph Clap, Johan Adam Philpe, Jorg Valentin Clap, Johann Ludowigh Clap, Christian Miller and Jurg Coch.  They were part of the emigration of Protestants from the Palatine area of Germany during the early 18th century.  His heritage was the neighborhood of Bingen and the Klopp castle (Schloss Klapp).  He apparently spent his early years in Istha and was confirmed in the German Reformed faith in Istha in 1682 at age 13.  Sometime before the birth of his children he moved to Weisenheim am Berg in Pfalz, Bavaria.  The area's name became Rheinland-Pfalz in 1948, at the close of WWII when Germany was reorganized.

He is also known by other variations of his name which include Johann Jost Klapp.  He used an initial when he signed his name "Joseph K. Clap" in Philadelphia in 1727.  This is a guess, but the use of the initial " k" could have been the result of some variation old style naming which would have been his given name, then the surname of his father, and then the name of the clan or neighborhood of his family heritage.  In his case, his heritage was the neighborhood of Bingen and the Klopp castle (Schloss Klopp).  He was confirmed in the German Reformed faith in Istha in 1682, at about age 13.

In 1704, in Weisenheim, the church recorded the birth of Jost's son Jurg (George Valentine) and the municipality noted Jost paid a new resident registration fee in the fiscal year 1704-1705.  Until then it is possible he was a resident of the area without the rights of citizenship, but the facts are not known.  In the fiscal year 1707-08, the municipality bought corn from Jost, reimbursed him for food and drink expenses when they had him dispatch a wagon to Kallstadt, and noted Jost's sale of barley to the schoolmaster.   In 1708-09, Jost sold oats to the clergyman, and in 1710-11, he sold 200 liters of wine.  Jost was charged for his share of the watchman fee in 1715-16, and in again in 1716-17 Jost paid the municipality for the value of fruit instead of delivering it.  In 1721-22, Jost received compensation and reimbursement because the master baker died in his house.

Throughout Jost's life, the Thirty Years War was in progress.  The country was devastated and over the years many, many thousands of Jost's fellow Palatinates left Germany.  At the time when his oldest children began to marry and the next oldest were apparently betrothed, Jost transported them all to America, except Jost's younger son, Ludwig, who was in nearby Dackenheim, noted in the church entry, "for the first time to the Lord's table:  1, Johann Ludwig Klapp von Weisenheim am Berg", on June 5, 1726, persons of the name were in Weisenheim as late as April 6, 1727, when the last Klapp entry was placed in the church record.

Notes for John Ludwig Clapp:

Came to Pennsylvania on September 27, 1727 on the ship James Goodwill. Johann Jost Klapp died in Berks Co., PA.  John Ludwig and George Valentine came to Guilford Co., NC, where they founded the Brick Church.John Ludwig Clapp's will, recorded in Will Book A, page 203, Orange County, North Carolina, proved February 1778, written July 25, 1768. Inhis will he states that his property is to be divided equally among his children. His estate settlement in 1778 gives the names of his sons and sons-in-law, indicating also that he had ten living children at the time.

Three families arrived in Old Orange from Pennsylvania in 1748.  They were on their way to the forks of the Yadkin.  They had stopped because the next day was the Sabbath and they were Sabbath-keeping people. Two of the families were George Valentine Clapp and wife; and his brother John Ludwig Clapp and wife.  The other family was Phillip Carl Hunter and his wife who was the sister of George Valentine and John Ludwig.  They had camped near Beaver Creek in what was to become Orange County.  In stories passed down, George Valentine's wife is said to have had a recurring dream where she saw a church on a hill overlooking a creek. She declared that she had found the spot there at Beaver Creek. The two Clapp brothers stayed and founded Der Klapp Kirche which later became known as The Brick church.  Mr Hunter continued on to the Yadkin and whether or not he made it is not known.

The Brick Church was originally a German Reformed Congregation datingback to the 1740's.  It was originally founded by two brothers, George Valentine Clapp and John Ludwig Clapp.  The German Reformed Church at that time often shared facilities with the Lutheran Churches.  Their beliefs were not that different and they shared the German Language. Brick Church originally shared with the Low's Lutheran Church, about a mile from the present location.  In 1770 the Brick Church was locked out of the Low's building because of political differences.  At that time, they started meeting in a Clapp log building.  It was then, that they became a regularly organized congregation.  At the time they were known as Der Kl app Kirche (The Clapp Church).  It was not until 1814 when a building was constructed of brick that they became known as Brick Church.

The following are the names as they were spelled on the ships list.

John Ludwig Clapp was born in 1711 in Istha, Hesse, Germany. He died before Jun 19, 1777 in Orange Co., NC. He married Anna Margaret Strader in 1735 in Bingen, Palatinate, Germany. She was born on Jun 18, 1717. She died on Jan 17, 1785.
