Notes for Thomas J. Clay:
Robert Clay remembers that his Uncle Tom lived up the mountain above their house in Banner Hollow. He remembers him traveling to Appalachia to work in the coal mines and just coming home on the weekends. He then started his own coal mine up the mountain from his house that he and his wife ran. Tom and Emma never had any children of their own, just Louis from Emma's first marriage. Thomas J. was killed in his own mine when Robert was about 8 or 9 years old (1935/36). Robert said two tons of sandstone fell on him and crushed him.
