Notes for Henry Jackson "Jack" Clay:
Raised as an orphan according to reports from other family members.

A family story goes that H.J. left home (TX/OK?) in 1901 when his youngest son, Willie Wade was about 7 years old. He supposedly went to California to find work and never returned.
Source: Personal recollections of Orin Clay, son of Eracho Charles Clay as related to Douglas E. Clay.

Author's Note: H.J. may not have went to CA, but instead went to NC looking for work, perhaps near his mother's birthplace. In personal correspondence from Thomas J. Clay, his nephew, to my father Thomas W.S. Clay in 1925, it stated that his uncle Jack Clay had died in NC 8 years ago. From that statement it would seem to indicate that H.J. died about 1917 in NC.
Source: Original letter dated 28 February 1925 from Thomas J. Clay of Banner, Wise Co., VA, son of Elbert Squire Clay to Thomas W.S. Clay, son of Charles Quincy Clay now in possession of Charles Clay.

Author's Note: Henry Jackson is somewhat of a mystery man. I have been unable to find him in the 1870, 1880 or 1900 census records. Will continue the search as there should be a record of him somewhere.

Notes for Margarette (Attaway) Smith:
Margarette entered her marriage with Henry Jackson with two children from a previous relationship.

Author's Note: Willis's wife Milbury appears to have died since the last census. In 1870 he is married to Nancy (Samples) Attaway, widow of Elisha Attaway who died in 1865 during the Civil War. It is quite possible that Elisha is Willis Attaways brother. The children listed in this record are probably a mixture of his, hers and theirs.
