SCMAR, Vol. XIV, Spring 1986, No. 2, p.116 JOHNS(T)ON-MORRIS-LEWIS-LOCKHART. Chester R. Johnson (SAACT #2, APO SF 96271) The 1880 census of Calhoun Co. Miss. says that Letty Morris, the mother of my great grandfather Joshua West Johnson (called John in the census) was b. S.C. His parents were Duncan Johns(t)on b. 1797 Bladen Co. Rebecca was a dau. of David Lewis Jr. b. 1726 Hanover Co. Va. d. 1787 Spartanburg Co. S.C. and his second wife Elizabeth Lockhart d. 1796 Spartanburg Co. S.C. David's first wife was Rebecca Stovall who he m. in Va. Crozier on page 86 of EARLY VIRGINIA MARRIAGES, 1953 lists a David Lewis m. 2 October 1759 in Augusta Co. Va. but no bride is given. This is the right time for David Jr. and Rebecca Stovall to have married. They had one daughter, Mildred who m. a Mr. Hale. Rebecca d. in Virginia. David moved to Rutherford Co. N.C. and then to the Camden Dist. S.C. He m. Elizabeth Lockhart near the Waxhaw Meeting House. Later they moved to the 96 Dist. in the part that became Spartanburg Co. They had 11 children: David b. 1763; Elizabeth b. c. 1765; Joel b. 1767; Pleasant b. c. 1769; Mary I. b. c. 1771 d. young; William b. c. 1773; John b. c. 1775; Rebecca b. 1774 or 1777; Prudence b. c. 1779; Mary II b. c. 1781; Capt. James b. c. 1784. Most of this data was collected by Wm. Terrell Lewis and printed in his book, The Genealogy of the Lewis Family in America, 1893. I have no more information on the Lockharts. There is confusion in some minds about David Lewis Jr. One L.D.S. microfische claims all of his children were children of Rebecca Stovall and all born in Virginia. I know this is incorrect. Does anyone know of any research on this family? For the ancestors of David Lewis Jr. see Volume IV, PIONEER LEWIS FAMILIES, 1985, by Michael L. Cook.
