Tuscaloosa Marriage Records: November 21, 1835, Nancy Honycutt to Thomas C Thompson, by F Sealy, J P.

Ancestors of Janie Thompson: Mother Louisa Shirley
Notes for LOUISA SHIRLEY:

There is some discreptancy about the marriage date. In the 1900 census of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, Cottondale district, John and Louisa both stated they had been married for 37 years, thus making their date of marriage 1863. Their marriage date as recorded in the records of Tuscaloosa County is October 18, 1869. A copy is in my file. In the 1900 Census of Tuscaloosa County, Louisa stated that she was the mother of 8 children with 6 still living.
Children of JOHN THOMPSON and LOUISA SHIRLEY are:
      i.      ALONZO5 THOMPSON, b. Abt. 1867.

Generation No. 2

2. NATHAN [NATHANIEL] A3 SHIRLEY (MOSES2, SHIRLEY1) was born Abt. 1809 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, and died Bet. 1860 - 1865 in ?Lauderdale County, Mississippi. He married EMILY A SIKES Abt. 1834 in Choctaw County, Alabama, daughter of ?ELIJAH SIKES and UNKNOWN. She was born Bet. 1816 - 1820 in Georgia, and died Aft. 1900 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.

Notes for NATHAN [NATHANIEL] A SHIRLEY:
Nathaniel, called Nathan, migrated to Washington, later Choctaw County, Alabama in the early 1830s with his brothers and sisters, and many associated family members.
There are two marriages references listed in the LDS. One lists, NATHAN A SHIRLEY to EMILY A SIKES, and the other one spells Emily's name SIPES. The ELIJAH SIKES family is found living near by in Washington, Choctaw County.
Also, in 1837, there is a marriage recorded in Choctaw County, Al for NATHAN SHURLEY to EMILY MILLER. It is unknown if this is the same or a different EMILY (? a previous marriage). In 1830 census Emily Miller is enumerated age 30-39,(b 1790-1800). It is possible that the marriage was the second marriage for both.

There are land purchases in Noxubee County, MS, in 1841 for Nathaniel Shirley. Nathan A Shirley is found in Lauderdale County, MS in the 1845 State MS Census, 1850 and 1860 Federal Census. It is unclear if this is the same Nathan Shirley.
NATHAN is not found, after the 1860 census of Lauderdale County, Mississippi, where he lived since 1847. My thoughts are that he died between 1861 and 1865, possibly in the Service of the Confederacy.
In 1870 Emily was listed in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama next door to John M and Louisa Shirley Thompson, who were married in approx. 1863 in Tuscaloosa County. They were still there in 1900 and also daughters Sarah Shirley Hooks and James and Nancy Shirley Holland.

More About NATHAN [NATHANIEL] A SHIRLEY:
Property: March 15, 1837, E1/2NE sec 5, twnshp 12-N rg 2-W, St Stephens Meridian, Choctaw County, AL

Notes for EMILY A SIKES:
There is some question of Emilys maiden name. In one place it is spelled Sipes, in others Sikes. The state of her birth is consistantly given as Georgia. The year of her birth is given from 1816, age 34 in the 1850 Lauderdale County, MS census, age 42 in 1850, to August of 1820 in the 1900 Tuscaloosa County, AL Census.
I can find no Sipes families in Georgia around 1816 to 1820, nor in Choctaw County, AL. Nathaniel A Shirley moved there with his brother Moses Shirley and other family members. Nathan is listed as purchasing land there on 3/30/1837.
In 1900 census of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, Emily was a widow, who had been married for 26 years. This would put the marriage date at about, 1834, considering Nathan died between 1861 and 1866. Emily stated she was the mother of 11 children, with 4 still living. Her daughter, Sarah Hooks was living with her. Next door were her daughters, John and Louisa Thompson and James and Nancy Holland. Son Moses was living in Choctaw County, AL.
