AMES HENRY CLAUSSEN:
James H. Claussen was the oldest of six sons that live d to adulthood of Emil and Sarah Claussen. He was probabl y born near Walshville, in Montgomery Co., Illinois, but gr ew up mostly in Jefferson County, Rome township. He was 1 3 when his father died in a cholera epidemic, and undoubted ly had to work quite hard to help his mother with the far m in Jefferson County, in the years that followed. Rev. Jo hn Johnson married James at age 21 to Louisa Bateman, and i t appears that he and his new wife relocated to Montgomer y County, near where James was probably born, south of Wals hville, where they appear with their first child in the 186 0 census near Claussen relatives. He appears on the Montgo mery Co. Militia Roll for 1861. In 1862 he purchased 20 ac res of land in Grisham township, near the land once owned b y Lucie Sophia and Hugo Claussen, who may be his Grandmothe r and Uncle. In 1863 they may have been living across th e county line in Bond County. At some point they moved t o Jackson County, Illinois, where some of James' Uncles an d Aunts on the Lingo side of the family lived. Perhaps th e rich farmland along the Mississippi River drew him to thi s area. At that time Jackson County was growing quickly, a nd opportunities were available due to the busy river traff ic and the recent coming of the railroad, which brought man y new settlers. He appears in the 1880 Jackson Co., IL cen sus in Kincaid township, district 35, a farmer, age 43.
A descendant, Ethel Jane Jones, recalled hearing tha t James was tall and blonde. Earnest Claussen believed tha t James and Louisa may have lived first at or near Wilkinso n's Island, then moved to Swan's Pond, below Raddle and nea r the river. At these places they farmed the river bottoml ands.
James' grandson, Aaron Otis Claussen, never met his gr andfather but said his grandmother Louisa talked of him. O tis said, "He was reputed to have been very mean. His son s would have to go out to the corn crib in the barn to pla y their fiddle."
James died of tuberculosis just short of his 52nd birt hday, and is buried with his wife and many of his descendan ts in Glenn Cemetery, west of Murphysboro on Route 3, in Ja ckson County, Illinois.

OUISA J. BATEMAN:
Louisa J. Bateman (some report Eliza Jane), was probab ly living in Jefferson County, Illinois, when she married J ames Claussen there in 1857. She may have been the daughte r of John and Sarah (Harper) Bateman, and/or related to Ash el Bateman, Rev. War veteran, who appear in the Jefferson C ounty records. The 1880 census indicates her father was bo rn in IN, and her mother in TN.
A descendant recalls hearing that Louisa was a large , dark complected woman, who may have been a mid-wife. Lou isa married a Civil War veteran named Rice after James' dea th, and she also outlived Mr. Rice. Her grandson Aaron Oti s related that she inherited Mr. Rice's pension, $8 per mon th, and that she acquired a 53 acre farm with a log home o n "the Slough", near the river. Her son Isaac Newton live d there with her, late in her life, and he inherited the fa rm from her and raised his family there. She died of measl es at age 66, and is buried at Glenn Cemetery.

ILLIAM M. CLAUSSEN:
Fact 4
William Claussen must have been an interesting person , as amusing stories about him have been passed down in hi s brother James' family. Although he was said to be gruff a nd cantankerous at times, this tall man would amuse childre n by wearing three pairs of spectacles on his long nose a t once. He lived very modestly and guests remember sleepin g on beds made of corn shucks on the floor. He was a farme r near Assumption and Owaneco most of his life, near his br other Gideon. His son-in-law reportedly owned a general st ore in Owaneco, and complained that "Bill" nearly drove of f customers with his barbs.
The story was told by his great-nephew Aaron Otis Clau ssen, that he and his Uncles Frank Claussen and Hillery Wor then went to William's when their Uncle Gideon's will was t o be read. William was quite disgusted with the many relati ves who came to hear the reading of his brother Gideon's wi ll in 1917. Gideon had died childless, and was quite wealt hy, and William felt that the many distant relatives that s howed up from many miles away were a bit too interested i n whether or not there was something for them in the will . William read the will to the group from his front porch , while wearing his three pairs of spectacles. After ever y paragraph or so that he read, he would peer up at the ass embled relatives and exclaim, "How's that suit ya!" While v isiting, Otis recalled finding one of William's hired men e ngaging in a drinking session in the barn, who told him, "D on't let the old man catch you taking a drink--he'll run u s all off."
His grandson Theodore French recalled that Bill ha d a collection of antique guns, and the family slept on cor n shuck mattresses.
He and his wife moved into town in 1917. He is burie d in Old Stonington Cemetery.

SAAC NEWTON CLAUSSEN:
Isaac Newton Claussen had a very interesting life. Mu ch has been written about him by his descendants; this is j ust a summary.
Isaac grew up in Jefferson and Christian Counties, Ill inois. At age 9 his father died, and the family probably s truggled through some difficult years. At age 20, he wen t West, possibly with two of his brothers, seeking to avoi d the Civil War in which they had relatives fighting on bot h sides. He was probably seeking adventure as well. He se rved as a scout for the army at Fort Laramie, WY, a stop o n the Oregon trail, and possibly was also a medic during th e Indian Wars, possibly under the name of Jack Johnson. H e was a crack shot all of his life, using a rifle without s ights. During this time he was wounded three times and cap tured by the Indians. After his initial capture, he was to rtured following an escape attempt. His feet were badly bu rned to prevent him from trying another escape. Never th e less, after he had healed sufficiently, he did manage t o escape when on a hunting outing with two of his captors . In the late 1860's he is believed to have worked as a sc out for wagon trains headed West. He is said to have bee n fluent in Native American languages, and on friendly term s with many of the Indians, despite his ordeal. While ou t West he may have married and had children, but nothing i s known for sure about this. It is known that in 1875, a t age 35, he returned to Illinois and married Mary Towberma n, a 15 year old girl, in Murphysboro. His brother James l ived in this area, and also an aunt and uncles. They proce eded to Hartley, Iowa, then Chillicothe, Missouri, where th ey lived for a short time, before traveling by covered wago n to South Dakota, an area very sparsely settled. Isaa c was familiar with the area from his time out West. They h omesteaded west of Armour for many years, where he had th e first barb wire fence in the region, and moved into tha t town about 1917.
Isaac and Mary had 16 children, including two sets o f twins, and have hundreds of descendants throughout the No rth-western U.S. and Canada.
