HRISTOPHER SHANNON CLAUSSEN:
Fact 4
Chris and Ethel Claussen spent most of their lives i n the Scottville, Illinois area. They worked the farm tha t had been his father's. They did move from the farm at Sc ottville to California in the 1930's because Chris had cont racted tuberculosis and the doctor recommended it. When th ey moved back, it was into a house in Scottville instead o f the farm. This is the same house that their grandson Jer ry Claussen raised his family in. Chris and Ethel Clausse n are buried at Scottville West Cemetery.
There is a story in the family that was well-known amo ng the older generation that involves Chris and his brothe r Charlie when they were young men. This is the story of t he Nortonville fight. Nortonville is a small community nea r Scottville. The story goes that Charlie was walking a yo ung woman home one evening, and that this young woman had a lso been seeing a fellow called "Stumpy" too. As they walk ed, Stumpy was following them and heckling. When they pass ed in front of a restaurant where Charlie knew Chris was ea ting, Charlie stopped and sent for or yelled for Chris. Wh en Chris came out of the front door, unaware of what was ha ppening, Stumpy was waiting for him and hit him with bras s knuckles. Stumpy aimed for his throat in an attempt to k ill Chris, but clipped his chin instead. At this point, kn ives were brought out and a brawl ensued. At the end of it , Stumpy was almost dead from stab wounds, but he did live . Chris, and especially Charlie, were also badly injured . The Claussen boys got off easy for the whole affair, bec ause their father was Justice of the Peace. As an old man , Charlie still had the suit he had worn that night, and i t was almost cut to shreds.
Chris traveled around for awhile as a young man, perha ps following this incident. He kept a little journal of hi s adventures that survives to this day. He dated Ethel's s ister Sylvia before courting Ethel.
The 1920 Greene Co. census shows the family living i n Athensville township. Chris owns the farm, but has a mort gage, and all the children are still at home. Their neares t neighbors are the Tribble and Hinman families.
