Notes for A
RCHIBALD ALEXANDER LINGO:
Archibald's date of birth is recorded as Nov. 2, 24, o r 28, 1823, by various sources. He was apparently called A lexander as an adult at least some of the time.
His marriage to Nancy McLaughlin is recorded in Randolp h County in 1848, yet Nancy appears as a 17 year old in he r parent's Randolph Co. household in the 1850 census with h er maiden name, and Archibald has not been located in the 1 850 census, nor has their son George who reportedly was bor n in 1849. Randolph County Circuit Court records reflect t hat Nancy applied and was granted a divorce from Archibald , who failed to appear, and it was finalized in May of 1851.
The recent find of a Circuit Court record in Jackson Co unty Criminal Court sheds some light on what may have occur red. In April of 1849, a grand jury convened in the matte r of "The People vs Alexander Lingo and Henry King". The c harge was "assault to do bodily injury" and witnesses wer e John McLaughlin, Sarah McLaughlin, and Emiline Lingo. Th e record reflects that a stick was used as a deadly weapo n on Apr. 5, 1849 in Jackson County, by Alexander Lingo i n his right hand, and he unlawfully made an assault where n o considerable provocation appeared, upon John McLaughlin . Apparently the two charged fled or hid, because in Apri l of 1851 when the court reconvened, they were "not found i n the county" by the Sheriff. In Sept. of 1851 bail was se t at $200 each. It was not stated in this record whether t he two were by that time in jail, but this seems to be impl ied. The dispensation of the case was also not stated.
Archibald A. Lingo is listed in the Public Domain Lan d Tract Sales for Illinois as purchasing a federal grant fo r 40 acres in Jackson County, S 36, T 7S, R 5W, M3, SWNE, o n Mar. 1, 1853. This land was in the northwest corner of th e county, near the Randolph County line, about 5 mi. west o f Ava, and near land owned by his brother Tyre. He has no t been located in the 1860 federal census either, but may h ave been in the household of one of his brothers or sister s in Jackson County. Archibald Lingo is listed in the Mili tary Census of 1862, Jackson Co., Illinois, a farmer, age 3 4, born in Missouri. He also purchased land in Randolph Co ., IL, and may have relocated there until his death in 1863.

ANCY EMELINE MCLAUGHLIN:
Nancy and Archibald Lingo were issued a marriage license i n Randolph Co., IL in 1848, although marriage returns for t hat year were lost. They appear to have not lived togethe r long, for Nancy appeared in her parent's home using her m aiden name in the 1850 census, and at Nancy's request of S ept., 1850 a divorce was granted her in Randolph County i n May of 1851. Nancy remained in her parent's home, liste d there in the 1860 census. Their son George Lingo appear s to have been called George McLaughlin until sometime betw een 1860 and 1870, and was in his maternal grandparent's ho usehold each census he is found in. Nancy married James N . Crandle in 1863. They lived next door to her parents an d she had several children in her marriage to Mr. Crandle . By 1900, she was living in Jackson Co., IL near the Rand olph Co. line with 3 of her adult children. She stated sh e had given birth to 6 children, 4 living.

Notes for GEORGE M. H. LINGO:
George Lingo was living with his Grandmother Sarah McLaughl in at the time of the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census. Until s ometime between 1870 and 1880, he was apparently known as G eorge McLaughlin. His mother was in the same household i n 1860 and 1870, and next door in 1880. George was a farme r near Rockwood, Randolph Co., IL, at his grandparent's far m. He was single. 8. MARTHA JANE3 LINGO (JAMES2, JAMES1)147 was born December 06, 1825 in Madison County, Illinois148,149,150,151, and died February 02, 1900 in Dry Hill, Kinkaid Twsp., Jackson County, Illinois152,153. She married (1) THOMAS WILLIAM ? COOK154. He was born in Illinois155,156, and died Abt. 1848. She married (2) ANDREW BRICEN JONES157,158 February 22, 1848 in Jackson County, Illinois159, son of ANDREW JONES ?. He was born July 17, 1783 in Near Charleston, Charleston Co., South Carolina160,161,162, and died November 11, 1862 in Illinois163. She married (3) JACOB B. YOUNGMAN163 Aft. 1864 in Probably Jackson County, Illinois164, son of ADAM YOUNGMAN and UNKNOWN. He was born July 10, 1820 in Illinois165, and died July 11, 1892 in Probably Jackson Co., Illinois166.

Notes for M
ARTHA JANE LINGO:
Alt. Birth
Martha was only 10 when her father died and the famil y was plunged into hard times. She married young, and wa s widowed three times. The 1865 IL state enumeration show s her as a widow with 7 young adults and children in her ho me, and livestock valued at $140. Little is known of her l ife, but her probate file indicates that she ended her lif e living quite modestly at her 80 acres on Dry Hill, sectio n 15, Kinkaid twsp. She endured a long illness during whic h her son John Youngman and his wife lived with her and car ed for her. Following her death, her acreage had to be sol d by court order, to pay the modest debts of her estate. Fo llowing settlement, her 9 heirs each inherited $19. She i s buried at the Jones Family Cemetery on Dry Hill, near Ava , Jackson County, Illinois. It is a tiny fenced cemetery a t the top of a hill, in the middle of a farm field, overgro wn by day lilies. Her stone is inscribed, "Sleep on dear m other, And get thy rest, God called thee home, He thought i t best."
There is confusion over her first marriage and the tw o Cook children, Hartly and Melvina. July 25, 1842, Marth a J. Lingo signed with her mark (an "X") a document in Bon d County along with her brothers Tyre and Hartly, stating t hat they were the minor heirs over age 14 of James Lingo, d eceased, and that they wished their mother Jane Lingo to b e appointed their guardian. However, if Martha is the moth er of Hartly Cook, one might assume she would already be ma rried and out of her mother's home, as he was born in Jul y of 1841. Perhaps his birth date is incorrect, or perhap s Martha is his mother, but was not married at the time, al though it seems unlikely in this scenario that she would st ill have legal status as a minor and no mention is made o f the child in the household of Jane Lingo. Some of his de scendants believe Hartly and Malvina Cook were the childre n of Mr. Cook's first wife. This seems unlikely to me fo r two reasons. First, they appear to be named for Martha J ane's siblings; and secondly, after their father died, sh e kept these children with her in her second marriage.
There is also question as to whether George and Jaco b Youngman were indeed her children. If so, they apparentl y did not live to adulthood, as they are not listed with he r heirs. A Nelly M. Black is listed as a 5 yr old dau ghter in the 1880 household of Jacob and Martha Jane Youngm an. Who she is is a mystery. Perhaps she was a foster dau ghter.

ACOB B. YOUNGMAN:
This Youngman family probably came from England origin ally, and may be descended from Adam Youngman who came fro m Pennsylvania. The family lived first in the Chester an d then near what later became Kincaid Lake, Jackson Co., Il linois. Jacob is listed with his first wife in the 1850 Ja ckson County census, northern district, their infant daught er, and John Youngman, age 20, probably his brother. The 1 876 ILLINOIS ATLAS lists a J. Youngman at Kinkaid twsp., Dr y Hill post office, sect. 15. This is probably Jacob. How ever, there is also another J. Youngman at Levan twsp., sec t. 26, Jackson County, but this one is later identified i n the 1907 Atlas as John.
In the book, AVA REMEMBERS, an 1889 newspaper item i s quoted as saying, "At the first shock we thought we had a n earthquake, but after we telephoned over the township, th e most reliable information that we could obtain was that U ncle Jakie Youngman had fell down. We have a whole soule d youngman in our township, who is in the neighborhood of s even feet high. The greatest objection we have to him, i s that his legs reach from his body clear to the ground."
Jacob Youngman is buried with his wife Martha and he r prior husband, Andrew Jones, at the Jones Family Cemeter y near Ava. All three are commemorated by one stone.
