Alt. Birth
Fact 4
Hartly Lingo's name is often seen as "Hartley" in reco rds, yet "Hartly" is the spelling of his signature as Admin istrator of an 1880 estate.
Hartly Lingo was a child of seven when his father died , and about 17 when his mother died. He was placed under t he guardianship of his brother Tyre in Jackson County, Illi nois on Sept. 15, 1847, a necessary step as he was underag e and needed permission when he married in that county th e next day.
Hartly's and his sister Mary's and brother Tyre's famil ies all appear as neighbors in the 1850 census for Jackso n County, in Section 36, Bradley west township, near the Ra ndolph County line and not far from the Mississippi River-- -their sister Martha Jane also lives in the vicinity. The 1 850 census lists him as a farmer, with real estate valued a t $250. The 1860 census lists him incorrectly as Henry C. L ingo, but it is his family. He is listed in the Military C ensus of 1862, Jackson Co., as age 34, a farmer, born in Il linois. The 1870 census shows Hartly still in Bradley tsp , a farmer, living next door to Hartly Cook, a nephew. Cou rt records indicate that Hartly and Elizabeth were separate d by 1869, although she is in the household in the 1870 cen sus, and divorced in 1873. He owned quite a bit of propert y at this time, in Jackson, Randolph, and Union Counties . Atheline was awarded a homestead out of the property fo r the children and herself, and the divorce papers reporte d that Hartly was residing with another woman prior to hi s divorce. This was probably the young woman who became hi s second wife as soon as his divorce was finalized, Mrs. Ma ry J. Dewitt, who with her prior husband had been a neighb or to Hartly's family.
The 1880 census shows Hartly, wife Mary J. an d a 3 yr old child named Cora Crawford in the household, wh o they appear to have raised. His son Lewis Harvey and hi s young family are neighbors. Where his other children an d former wife were living at that time is unknown, except f or daughter Elvira who was living in Los Angeles, CA. Hart ly appears to have remained in the Bradley area until at le ast 1886, as he appears in probate records as the administr ator of the estate of his friend, William M. Duncan, of tha t place. However, his great-grandson Harvey E. Lingo recal led that Hartly was in Johnson Co., MO before 1884, when h e provided 160 acres of his land to his son Lewis Harvey . Perhaps Hartly returned to IL to settle his friend's est ate from his new residence in Missouri.
The records show that at some point between 1880 an d 1890 he and his son Lewis and family removed to what cam e to be known as Post Oak, Johnson Co., Missouri. Family l ore passed down among Hartly's descendants and recounted i n the book, UNTIL THEN, tells that he went to the Californi a gold fields immediately prior to his settlement in Missou ri, and having been successful in his venture there he deci ded not to return to Illinois. Soon after his settlement i n Missouri the place came to be known as Lingo City or Ling o Station, but later was changed to Post Oak. His descenda nts recall that the Johnson and Henry County lines met in f ront of the Lingo family farmhouse. Hartly appeared ther e in the 1900 and 1910 census and the 1902 tax assessment l ist. The 1900 census lists him as a farmer. He owned a si zable amount of land in the county and raised cattle and ho rses. In 1901 he allowed the organizers of the new Post Oa k branch of the LDS Church to hold their first meetings i n a store building that he rented to them at Post Oak. Hi s wife and son and other family members became members of t his congregation, but Hartly was referred to in church reco rds as "an outsider" in 1901 when he rented the building t o them.* He is said to have donated land for another churc h building and cemetery as well.
He and Mary must have divorced about 1906, as she move d away from Post Oak at that time. Toward the end of his l ife he stated he had been married 3 times, but only the nam es of two are known to us. If he was married for a 3rd tim e it must have been sometime after 1906, and he was eithe r widowed or divorced by the 1910 census. At that time h e was age 82, and appeared to be retired, but had 3 familie s boarding with him, including a granddaughter and her husb and and children. He died in 1917 at the age of 89 years a t his home at Post Oak, with a daughter and a son at his be side. He was the last of his siblings to pass away. His f uneral was held at the L.D.S. Church in Post Oak. He was b uried at Providence Cemetery, the cemetery he had donated l and to establish. According to his descendant Wanda Lingo G ust in the late 1990's, "His tombstone continues to dominat e the cemetery".

*Text of the first paragraph of "The Autobiography of Pos t Oak Branch": The L.D.S. church or the work of the Lord a s a branch was started in the year 1901 with Brother S.J. M adden as President, holding our meetings in a store buildin g which an outsider by the name of Mr. Hartley Lingo rente d to us which made us an independent people so far as churc h privileges were concerned. Much prejudiced (sic) reigne d but the Lord was with his people with his Holy Spirit an d much good was done and many received the word and were ba ptized. Brother Madden however had to leave us but befor e doing so ordained a Priest, a Teacher and a Decon (sic) a nd left the work in the hands of the Priest Brother Henry H oits. Report made out Aug. 29, 1910 Uella Raveill, Branc h Historian.

LIZABETH ATHELINE POSTON:
Atheline was part of a family of Poston's who came from Jef ferson Co., IL to Jackson Co., IL around the time of her ma rriage to Hartly. They were divorced in 1873, and she didn 't remarry. She appears as "Elizabeth A. Lingo" in the hou sehold of her son George in the 1910 census, in Hollywood , CA. A neice and her husband and a nurse also are in thi s household, implying that she probably required some car e at the end of her life. She died there in 1911.

ARY J. STEBBENS:
Alt. Birth
Mary Jane had no children. Her surname was probably Ste bbens since a woman who was probably her mother, Martha Ste bbens, was living with Mary and her prior husband in 1870 . She was married to Robert Dewitt, a farmer born in India na like herself, prior to her marriage to Hartly. The 187 0 census shows them as neighbors to Hartly and his first wi fe and children in Bradley tsp, Jackson Co., IL. She marri ed Hartly in Randolph Co., IL as soon as his divorce was fi nalized. Whether Mr. Dewitt died or they divorced is unkno wn. She and Hartly appear to have raised a child named Cor a E. Crawford, who married Barr or Burr Loar/Lour and live d in Post Oak, MO for a time.
Mary was baptized at Post Oak, MO into the LDS Church o n Jan. 20, 1895, prior to the establishment of the branch c hurch at Post Oak. She may have been one of the organizer s of the branch and probably was influential in persuadin g her husband to rent his store building for the first meet ing place of the Post Oak branch. She formally placed he r membership there by letter in 1903. It is believed tha t she and Hartly divorced, probably about 1906. She and Co ra and Cora's husband transferred their memberships on Jul y 30, 1906 to the Independence, MO LDS church. What becam e of her after this date is unknown.

He was born Abt. 1825 in Tennessee253, and died Abt. 1859 in Probably Jefferson Co., Illinois254.

Notes for L
UCINDA EVALINE LINGO:
Lucinda would have been only 15 at the time of her marriag e in 1850. She and James were married by Samuel Watkins, J .P. That same year, the Jefferson County, IL census (947/94 7) shows James and Lucinda living with the Zachariah Hampto n family, probably his parents and brother. But Evaline app ears as head of household with the 5 children in Rome towns hip at the time of the 1860 Jefferson County census, whic h implies James' death in about 1859, given the age of th e youngest child. She is in Rome twsp, where her sister Sa rah and family lived. There is no Lucinda or Evaline in th e 1870 census of the county, and no clear record of remarri age in that county. No later record has yet been located o n any of the children except Newton, who appears in the 188 0 census.
