| The family re-union in Lunenburg was fantastic!! It brought shivers to many as the "Foreign Protestants" Memorials were unveiled, to honor them as the founders of Lunenburg, N.S. To see each and every name carved in the marbel monuments was just awesome!! It was great to see where our forefathers first landed and to see the plots they worked so hard to earn. I made many new contacts while there, so this site will be growing again in the fall when I can get all the new information added. HAVE A LOOK AT THE PICTURES FROM THE FOREIGN PROTESTANT MEMORIAL. Allan Joseph Borgal (my father) was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. He married Edna Jean Blackmore on August 30, 1937. This site has been the result of trying to find where my father's family originated from. Philipp Baargeld was the father of Johannes Borgal, who was among the first "Foreign Protestants" to come to Halifax on June 25, 1751. When the "Borgal" family sailed to Halifax from Germany in 1751 on the Murdock, the German spelling for this name was Baergeld or Baargeld ("d" is silent) when the ship arrived in Halifax the names of the passengers were written down as they sounded and in the documentation that I have the name Baergeld was then recorded as "BORGAL". Depending on what community the family lived in, was how the surname "BORGAL" was recorded in census records, births, deaths, etc. When the family moved to Lunenburg, the family name was then written down as "BARGELT" ("T" is silent). As the children of the different families married and moved to different communities, their surname was written down as it sounded and therefore the spellings changed. I could have changed all the surnames to Borgal, but I wanted to keep this site authentic, as to how the family name was recorded when I found the information and to better understand our heritage. The spellings of "Borgal" include: Baargeld, Baergeld, Bargeld, Bargelt, Bargell, Bargold, Baugald, Baugil, Baugild, Baugilt, Borgal, Borgald, Borgalt, Borgel, Borgeld, Borgeldt, Borgelt, Borgild, Borgold, Borgull! This has been a very confusing search, but very intersting at the same time. Without census records, birth records, etc. to verify these family connections, with all the different spellings, would not have been possible. Thankyou to all the many family members that have been so kind to contribute to ""OUR" family tree! If you find a connection to your family or have information that has not been included in this site please contact me at my e-mail address. Thankyou to all of our new found family members for your support of this site and also the information to make this site possible! I would like to say a very special "THANKYOU" to Chris Young, Terry Beaver and George Borgal who have kindly donated years of their research to our Family Page and without them this page would not have grown as quickly! Thankyou all so very much! |
