Notes for Thomas Arthur Clarke, Jr.: Per Irene Clarke Robinson: Tom was Christened in the ME Methodist Church in Philadelphia. As a child, Tom was sickly. He was born a "blue baby" and had an open heart valve that never closed. Irene as his younger sister was a "tomboy" who protected him. They lived in Phildelphia near Frankfurt Ave. and Allegheny Ave. As he grew older, Tom like to hang out with the DeMolay boys.
Per Edith: About 1940-1941, he was a volunteer air raid warden. They had blackouts at times, and he had to check that no light could be seen from outside the houses.
He went in the Navy about 1942. He went away for training in New England. When he finished training, he was assigned to Vallejo, CA a naval depot. Edith took the train from Philadelphia to St. Louis to California to join Tom. Tom's mother lived at Edith and Tom's house while they were away. On the base in Vallejo, Tom had to wear his uniform, completely. This entitled you to a naval apartment and free bus transportation. Later Tom took the train home and drove the car out for Edith to use to drive to work.
He worked for Brown Instruments in Philadelphia, before he went into the Navy. After they returned to Philadelphia, he worked for Iowa Soap Company. Later he worked for Honeywell.
