Personal diary of Clement Hanibal Allen:

"To go back -- my mother was Mary Ann Hancock and born and lived in Kentucky. The Hancocks of revolutionary fame were kin to my mother's ancestors. She was born in 1818 and married P. B. Mahon, by which marriage she had 3 children--Archibald, Jas. N. and Felix G. They moved to Texas in about 1840 and settled near the town of Fayetteville, in Fayette County. In about 1842, Mahon died and in 1843 the widow, my mother, married Phillip Mealor, by whom she had one child, Wm. (Billie) P. Mealor. Phillip Mealor was killed by Mike Muckleroy in 1845, and the widow my mother, in 1847 married my father, Clement Allen. By this marriage there was Sallie E., the writer Clement H., Geo. H., Ada and Alice (twins). My father and mother in 1849 moved from the old Union Hill - Industry - Mill Creek neighborhood to a point 5 miles east of Fayetteville on the Austin, Bastrop, LaGrange and Houston Public Road 80 miles from Houston, and improved a farm - built a large dwelling in which I was born, Dec. 28th 1850. This home was some 12 to 20 miles from the old settlements before named. Herearound us lived my mother's full brother Davis W. Hancock and two half brothers Hiram & Sam Hancock. About the years 1850 to 1855 an aunt of mine, who was a full sister of my mother, named Elizabeth (Aunt Betty), moved with her two children - Ada & Anna Aydelott, from Kentucky and married a Wm. Punchard. They settled & farmed and merchandized at a place called Sempronius, about 5 miles south of Chappel - lived there & raised a large family of children & step children from both sides."

"As heretofore recited my father & mother, at my earliest recollection, had 11 children - 9 boys & 2 girls (My twin sisters, Ada & Alice, were born later, in 1859), all under one roof."
