"I am sure, at this time, no one but myself cares where I came from or where I may go. The greed for gold supplants every thing. But the time may come when some of my connection, in looking back to see whether our origin is from 'man or monkey' may read this:

"As I get it from tradition and family history, my father was one of two sons of William Allen who came at an early period to Mississippi and moved, when my father was a small boy, to Illinois. My father's name was Clement and was the younger of the two boys. William was the other boy's name. My father was born in 1810, and at the age of 21, in 1831, emigrated with a lot of young men to Texas, and settled in and about New Ulm in Austin County."

"From my early childhood I have visited with and among every family herein named, 7 of those who were living 60 years ago & since I was & am personally acquainted & I have known them all & their descendants up to the 3rd degree of kinship and I will challenge the world to name one of this vast array of people, within the degree named, that was ever guilty of a disgraceful offence."

Clem Allen at one time owned a ranch near Lampasas, Texas, and probably lost his fortune when his cattle herd all died during a late wet norther and freeze, while on a cattle drive to market in Kansas.

Bates Allen remembered his dad sending him out on a mule to hunt quail for dinner with a shotgun, on the ranch at Lampasas. Ammunition was so expensive that Bates' goal was to circle a covey of quail and bunch them together so as to kill them all with one shot from the back of the mule.
