My Dear Brother,
Your last letter to hand which I saw at Mother's last week - poor old Mother, she suffers to an awful degree, she can neither lie, sit, or stand many minutes together, and fast standing or walking is out of the question, as she has to be carried from the bed to the sofa and vice versa. She is very patient under all her sufferings, but no one can do anything for her but our Bob, and he tends her like a child. I don't know what they would have done had he been working, as it is as the saying is everything happens for the best. We all of us lads go down a few times a week and do what we can for them. Our Imogene comes from Patricroft every week and is very kind to her. I don't know how long her illness may last but it may possibly last months and perhaps a few weeks, but up to now she has been bedfast 3 months, her hip and abdomen being fearfully swollen with the dropsy.
We had a letter from our Warren a few weeks ago saying he had been taken on in a commercial house in Maryborough as bookkeeper, but did not know for a certainty whether it would be a permancy or not but I hope it will and if so I have no doubt but he will do well as he is possessed of a vast amount of knowledge in the shipping and home trade departments of commercial houses - in fact there are few men who are so well up in their business as he is, so I can leave him with confidence and say he is likely for doing well.
I myself am still working at which(?) Turney and cannot get anything better as yet, and am not doing well at that being very slack. I intend leaving at the first opportunity but opportunities as turnies are very rare. I am now secretary of the Conservative Club for which position there is a small salary. I hope through taking a prominent part in politics to ultimately succeed in reaping some advantage. My wife and child a little boy are getting on very well. Polly sends you her love and was glad to hear you was well and in good work as she often wishes I was the same.
Mill Beaford is still in Cumberland and is doing pretty well, as we correspond together and you know what a general newsmonger I am. I keep him pretty well up in the sayings and doings of Newton Heath. He had the misfortune to lose one of children a few weeks ago but still has two Linny(?). I may inform you that John Bromeley was married the other week to a Miss Volsterrcroft who comes from Cheshire. Emma and Isabel Bromeley wish to be remembered to you as does Jim West. So I will Conclude
with love from your affectionate Brother and Sister,
Joe and Polly
