Notes for ROGER PUTTENHAM:
The Putnam family name refers to the town of Puttenham. The name Puttenham comes from the Flemish PUTT for a well and HAM for hamlet or village. The lands were a village by a well. The parish of Puttenham today lies some 40 miles north of London and the ancient town of Tring. Original lands lay in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire north and west of London. By the 1400s, holders of Puttenham were granted their own Coat of Arms and were knights. The Puttenham manor remained with the family until the 16th Century.
