Notes for L
EWIS JOHNSTON:
Lewis Johnston (probably James Lewis) was born about 1757. Lewis died between 1825-1828 in Georgia, at about 68 years of age. He married twice. He married an unknown woman in North Carolina, about 1789. She and their first child probably died during childbirth about 1791 in North Carolina. He then married Sarah Steadman in North Carolina about 1795.

Apparently, around 1820-1824, Lewis and all the children, except George Gregory, who had run away from home "to seek his fortune out West" in 1813 at the age of 14, left North Carolina and settled southeast of Atlanta, Georgia, around Henry, Butts and Newton Counties. Lewis probably died a couple of years later, and is buried somewhere in that area.

  Notes for GEORGE GREGORY JOHNSTON:
James Perry Johnston, in 1931, either placed or arranged to have placed a memorial marker at Siloam Cemetery in honor of his grandparents, George Gregory and Martha Burton Johnston. Supposedly, it is located on the original grave site. Whether it is on the original site or not is strictly speculation at this point, as is whether or not here was an original marker, or markers. At the present time, there is no sign of an original marker. The marker that James P. placed is constructed of concrete rather than marble or granite, and is deteriorating badly. It is in sore need of replacement with something more permanent.
