| Our ancestors moved to Forrest County, Mississippi, from Washington County, Alabama, in the late 1890s. When they arrived at their new home, their name was "Clements." But in the early 1900s the spelling of the name mysteriously changed to "Clemts." Although I have been told that the name change was the result of a family feud, we may never know the precise reason for it. In fact, I have come to believe that it was not deliberate at all but likely the result of a simple spelling error. Our Patriarch was James West Clements. Records from 1800 show James in the State of North Carolina, although his marriage to Nancy Jane Wilkes occurred in Georgia. With the opening of Indian lands, the Clements family, like many others, migrated to Barbour County, Alabama, and eventually to Washington County, Alabama. Five of James's and Nancy's sons fought in the Civil War, at least three of whom were killed. Proudly, one of those killed is listed on the Confederate Roll of Honor, a most honored distinction. James West Clements died in Washington County, Alabama, and his grave is marked only by a large, uninscribed stone. Nancy moved with her youngest daughter to Mississippi, but unfortunately, her exact place of death and the location of her grave are not known. Most members of the Clements family remained in Alabama, some in Choctaw County, and some in Washington and Mobile Counties. However, one of them, Thomas Francis Clements, moved with his wife, Agnes Cayton Clements, and their children, Thomas Francis Jr. and Sam, to Forrest County, Mississippi. Two more children, Claude and Annie, eventually were born to Thomas and Agnes. We are all descendents of these pioneering Mississippians. I have listed a great deal of information about our family in this site. I have verified most of it to the best of my ability, but my research is always ongoing!
