Preface

This document is a tenth draft of our family genealogy. Significant amounts of additional data is being collected and researched. As an example, the subjects Sur-names spelling crisscross' between Basford and Bashford. The "h" appears in the name more often after 1870 and especially with those branches of the family that moved out of Kentucky. In addition, the spelling of Bassford is also found in the earlier parts of the century. Phonics played a key role in the spelling of surnames during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, especially since literacy rates were not that high. Case in point: my great-grandfather, John W Bashford's last name is spelled differently in various official and non-official records during the 1800's i.e., Bassford, Basford, Bashford, etc..

There are items within this document being researched for completeness and accuracy. Remember this is a draft and by no means is it represented as being complete or 100% accurate, so with your review, critique, feedback and contributions, the fulfillment of this document will be attained.

I would like to thank all that have contributed, especially my mother Kathryn Louise (Bashford) Clendening (I miss you mom) and her brother Oscar Bashford for their assistance with this project. In addition a special thank you to Paul Russell Bashford who is also researching and providing valuable input regarding our Basford and Bashford genealogy.

As you may know, genealogical research can be very time consuming, and frustrating at times, however, with your assistance and contributions, it will be very rewarding not only to us but for future generations to come.

Sincerely,

Joel Dean Clendening
