I have been keen to find out how the Clennells in my family got their name. This is how I see it. In the early 1800's three families came together - the Robsons from Newcastle, the Hollands from Manchester & the Clennells from London [origins in Newcastle]. The connecting link seems to be a strong Unitarian faith. Two Robson sisters - Ann & Elizabeth, in 1800 married respectively, John Edward Clennell, Schoolmaster in Hackney & Thomas Holland, Schoolmaster in Manchester. JEC & Ann had a son JEC[2] who married his cousin Jane Price Holland in 1829, but they had no children. Jane's sister Elizabeth married young [1832]a James Cash, Oil Merchant in Manchester. Their marriage sadly lasted only until 1840 when they both died, probably from TB. They had 3 children, William, Arthur & Walter. In 1843 Walter was taken into the home of his Aunt Jane & Uncle [also 1st cousin once removed]adopted by them & given the name Clennell. The search for positive identification of his grandparents - James & Sarah Cash is proving a sticking point. In 2004, more work on the Clennells in Northumberland has been been done by Richard Clennell. Further links to the Gaskell/Holland families have been established & thus with the Wedgwoods & their link to the Darwins. Unitarians are an united body throughout the 18th & 19th Centuries, as these inter-linked families show. Updated 17 Oct 2004. JC. |
