| Since my grandmother, Mrs Ethel Clements (née Chivers) died in January 1997 at the age of 95, I have been engaged on the search for my family roots. I live in Midsomer Norton, a small town situated ten miles south of Bath and Bristol. Many people in the past were drawn to this area of North Somerset because of the extra income they could earn in the coal mining industry, which finally closed down in the 1970's. So far about 95% of my ancestors were miners. In the course of my research, our name has crossed with the following family names: Taylor Chivers Bridge Jones Flower Coles Box Carter Chiswell Carpenter Willcox Ashman Shearn Bryant Emblen Penny Gregory Bevan Churchill James Barter Sperring Beal(e) (from South Somerset) Holcombe (from West Somerset) Owens (from S.Wales) Williams (from S.Wales) Williams (from Herefordshire) Lang (from North Devon) Clapp (from Devon) Burge (from West Somerset) Bale (from West Somerset) I have so far had success in finding CHIVERS descendants in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Australia, SHEARN descendants in Texas and CHISWELL descendants in Canada. In addition, I have found numerous distant cousins here in the UK. I have got back to the sixteenth century with certain branches of the family and I would be happy to share any information with anyone who may find these names of use. The one branch which is causing some difficulty is my own name and I would be grateful to anyone who could supply more information about the Clements name in the Mendip parishes of Somerset pre nineteenth century. |
