2. JAMES2 MCGILLION (MICHAEL1) was born April 15, 1858 in Clogherney Glebe, County Tyrone, Ireland, and died in Sydney, Australia. He married ANNE MCGINLEY 1892 in St. Bede's Church, Pyrmont, Australia.

AMES MCGILLION:
(Family notes provided by Mick McGillion, Blaxland, NSW, Australia)

James arrived in Sydney on the ship "Lochee" on 24 February 1878. He had embarked at Plymouth, England on 30 November 1877. He is described on the Agents Immigration List as 'McGellon, James', age 20 years, from County Tyrone, single, Catholic, unable to read or write and his occupation as 'labourer'. His parents were listed as Michael McGILLION, farmer, and Ellen (nee McBRIDE). They were still living at the time. Interestingly, the ship's Master's List of Passengers shows his name as 'McGillow".

(* Also travelling on the same ship ("Lochee") was a Felix McBride, aged 22, the only other single man from Tyrone. Unfortunately Felix's parents were deceased and therefore not named on the shipping list. Felix was most probably cousin to James )

James spent the majority of his working life employed by the government-operated Tramways Department in Sydney as an 'outdoor labourer'. He commenced there in December 1901. Their records have his birth details as15 April 1858 (this birth date is unconfirmed) at Plumbridge, Co Tyrone. He retired at age 68 in 1926.

Family tradition has it that he 'ran away' from home at an early age; there are no records. I suspect he was about 14 or 16 years old and travelled to Scotland for work. My late aunt (James' first daughter-in-law) used to say he was only 12 when he left home.

According to family stories, James met his future bride in Sydney, through the services of a 'matchmaker'. According to the Marriage Register, James was then a labourer, living in Surry Hills, a suburb about 2 miles from Sydney CBD.

NNE MCGINLEY:
(Family notes provided by Mick McGillion, Blaxland, NSW, Australia)

Annie McGinley, was a cook from Ultimo, another inner suburb, possibly 'living in' with her employer. Annie and her sister Margaret had reached Sydney (also from Plymouth) on the 'Hereford' 6 December, 1878. She was 16 years old, her sister 18. An older brother who had arrived earlier sponsored them. The McGinleys were natives of County Donegal, Ireland. Both sisters were listed as 'general servants' and could read and write.
