Notes for James ALLEN: James Allen was born about 1636 [Ed.: original Harwood Genealogy manuscript said 1682, same as James' son John] and died 25 July 1714, aged 78 years, and his wife survived until 7 August 1722, being the same age at the date of her death. His wife was Elizabeth Partridge, daughter of George Partridge and Sarah Tracy of Duxbury.
He was one of the original four purchasing proprietors who became active in the development of Tisbury. At one time he owned seven of the original home lots on the west side of Old Mill River. He was one of the first Justices of the Peace after the island became part of the Massachusetts government. In 1701 he gave the town of Tisbury its first God's Acre for the burial of the dead. His body lies within this enclosure marked with a well-preserved slate stone. His declining years were passed in Chilmark, where a large family of a dozen children were reared and married. His son Benjamin was the first college graduate (Yale 1706) from Tisbury.
