History (from: RECIPES,FROM OUR HOUSE TO YOURS,HIGHLAND COMMUNITY COOKBOOK,SPONSORED BY SOLID ROCK CHURCH) Three miles west of Hohenwald lies a small community known as Highland.Leonard Cheatham received a state grant for the land between Cane Creek and Rockhouse Creek.Highland Community was included. After his death, his wife,Edith, and son,Felix, sold this land to W.P.Grover.In 1928,he sold to Charles Hall and L.A.Cunningham.In 1930,County Trustee,Felix Goodman, forclosed.Three months later,Hall transferred his half interest to Lucy Hall. She sold her half interest to Hall Land Mining Co. in 1932.It was sold back to her in 1933, and she kept it until 1938, then sold it to A.B.Davis.A few months later,he sold to W.G.Bach.Bach's heirs sold the land to Daniel and Griffith, who later sold it to R.M.Lee in 1944. In 1936,three families were living in the community: the Deavers, the Smiths, and the Andersons. The Deavers founded three churches, two of which were in the Highland Community. The first was the Full Gospel Pentecostal Church. They also donated the land where the church and cemetery now stand. The second is now Mt Zion Pentecostal Church. The Andersons built the first house on what we now call Garrison Roda. At that time, the area was all open range.Luther Reeves and Oscar Bell ran sheep, cattle and hogs throughout the area.A wagon path led to the horse pond at the end of Garrison Road.John and Irma Smith built a log cabin on Old Linden Highway.Their daughter,Ruth, married the Anderson's son,Owen. They later moved to their present home on Wild Cat Road. Granville and Odell Peavhouse moved to the community in 1939,and lived in the community until their deaths.Family members visit the area regularly. In 1945,Henry and Verna Garrison bought their homeplace from Mr. Lee.THe original site of the home is where Glen Melton now lives. The first Garrison home burned. He later sold it to Ezra and Irene Hinson. In the 40's, Stanfill and Annie Hinson ran a small store where the Mercer land is now.Stanfill moved his business further down the road and they lived in back of the store. In 1946,Coleman Hinson hired Dena and Dillard Brewer to build a store on the highway.Little did he know,Hinson's Store would remain the focal point of the community for almost half a century. His sons.Ezra and Waymond, took charge of the store and moved it across the road in 1957, when the new highway was being builtWaymond bought him out in 1958.He and his wife,Wilma, made a small apartment in back of the store and lived there until they built a house next to the store.Wilma ran the cafe until 1962.Waymond ran the store until his health began to fail. In August of 1968,Waymond leased the business to Alvis and Sylvia Hinson. They hired Edna Chandler to run the store until they moved from Michigan to the community. They ran the store until 1972,when their lease expire..Waymond had died three years earlier and Wilma resumed the business. In 1973,the store burned to the ground. The community was indeed lost without a store so in 1974,Alvis and Sylvia rebuilt Hinson's Store. They ran the business together until 1983,when Alvis suddenly died.Peggy Harper had been working for him at the time.In November of 1983,Sylvia decided to sell the business to Peggy. Stanfill and Annies oldest son,Raymond, remained on Garrison Road, except for six years, until his death. His wife,Kathleen, still lives in their homeplace.Several children also remained. Other Hinson family members soon moved into the community: Stanfill's sisters and brother,Rushton,Miss Alice and Miss Delphia. Rushton married Eva (14 years) in 1932.They moved to the ridge in the late 40's.In 1953,they bought two acres for $50.00 from Mr.Anderson.Their youngest daughter,Carolyn, still lives on the old homeplace.Miss Alice married Arthur Hensley and then Waymond Stephens. She had four children. Miss Delphia was married to Alvis Armstrong and had three children. Then, she married Miles McDonald and they had five children. Zula Mae,Johnny, and Edward (Jr.) presently live on the ridge, and many of their children, also. Leamon and Leda Hinson moved their family to the ridge in 1959.They had eight children.Leda and Randy still live on their homeplace. Lonnie and Mary Ann Mercer moved to the community from Perry Co in 1950.Lonnie operated a sawmill, grocery store, and then a tire shop. They had two sond,Gene and Kenneth, still in the area.Mary Ann lived in the Highland Community until her death. Bill and Celia Broadway moved to the community in 1950.They had one daughter,Billie Jo.Preacher Broadway was a supervisor at Genesco. In 1966,Raymond Reeves bought land from Granville Peavhouse and moved from the James Place on Wildcat to the ridge. He and his wife,Edith, had five children. In the 50's,Walter Lee built Highland Drive-In Theater and the race track.Earnest Pollock bought it after 1955.His wife stated he bought the race track to prevent noise interference from the races at show time at the theater. He sold both properties to Darnell Scott in 1977.A new race track is now on the property. The First Freewill Baptist Church in Hohenwald began in this community in a one-room structure on Garrison Road in which Randy Hinson now lives. In 1993,Solid Rock Freewill Baptist Church joined the community in the old Stanfill Hinson house on Linden Highway. In 1972,Highland Baptist Church services were held under the old sawmill of J.D.Nichols.A new church building was built on the corner of Garrison and Linden Highway. Many new faces have been added to our community and many old familiar faces have long since departed this life. But to those of us who grew up on Hinson Ridge, we will always remember Ma'am,Mammy,Ezra,Waymond,Miss Annie,Uncle Cap,Alvis,Hessie and all the others who made such an impression on us all.
