DAVID CLINE was born on May 20, 1796, in Loudon County, Virginia and died on June 09, 1857, in Beaver Township, Noble County, Ohio. He was married to ELISABETH DELONG, who was born on March 15, 1796, and died on May 23, 1880, in Beaver Township, Noble County, Ohio. David's father was JOHN CLINE, who moved to Beaver Township, Noble County, Ohio where he worked as a blacksmith. John Cline died in Noble County. I believe my line is related to the Monroe County, OH Clines who descend from Hans George Cline but am seeking a direct male Cline relative from John Cline's line to prove it. If you are willing to take the Y DNA test, just contact me at ludicy@bellsouth.net and I will put you in touch with the Cline Y DNA administrator.

The Monroe County, OH Clines and the North Carolina Clines are related, as shown by the Y DNA test results. The North Carolina Clines have succeeded in tracing their line back to Alsace in the 1600s.

SARAH ANN MATSON, born on September 20, 1839, died on October 18, 1909. She was married to ISAAC CLINE, the son of DAVID CLINE AND ELISABETH DELONG. SARAH'S mother's name was ELIZABETH TALBOTT and her father was WASHINGTON MATSON. The Matson and the Talbotts were Quakers. The Talbotts originated in Maryland and are well researched. Washington Matson's father was Eli Matson of Morgan County, OH. Eli's will is on file with the courthouse in Morgan County wherein he named Sarah as his granddaughter through her late father, Washington. The Matsons originated in Pennsylvania. Bruce Matson published a book a few years ago containing a great deal of research on the family, tracing them back to the 1690s in Pennsylvania. They most likely were English and should not be confused with the Swedish Matson family already living in Pennsylvania at the time of their arrival from England.

JAMES R. HALEY was born in Virginia around 1767. He moved to Franklin County, Georgia, by way of North Carolina, sometime around 1800. He is related to WILLIAM HALEY of Elbert County, Georgia, but the familes no longer recall the nature of the relationship. According to the Haleys still living in Franklin County, the two familes have always attended each others' funerals and weddings. James' father and brothers decided against staying in Georgia and settled in Spanish Texas sometime before 1825. There is a very active Haley research group. If you are interested, please contact me and I will put you in touch with the group moderator.

I am aslo researching the family of CARL H. ANDERSON, born in Norway on March 03, 1838, and died in Door County, Wisconsin on March 21, 1903. His wife was Pauline Christensen, born in Porsgrun, Telemark, Norway. She came to the US with her father, Christen Pederson, and settled in Manitowoc, WI. She and Carl were married in Manitowoc and most of their children were born there before they moved to Door County, WI. Carl was a ship's carpenter while they lived in Manitowoc and took up farming when they moved to Door County. I believe he raised horses and ran a livery stable in Sturgeon Bay.

Family Photos

  • Walter Matson Cline, Jr., and his cousin Margaret (95 KB)
This is from his baby book. Margaret is probably Margaret Duncan, a Haley cousin.
  • Births from the Cline Family Bible (1474 KB)
Taken from the family Bible of Isaac Cline and Sarah Ann Matson
  • Deaths from family Bible for Isaac Cline (1011 KB)
This was taken from the family Bible for Isaac Cline and Sarah Ann Matson. Note that the spelling for their daughter Louissa differs on the page for her birth and on the page for her death. Louissa vs Lousia. I don't know the correct spelling.
  • Walter Matson Cline's high school graduation photo (125 KB)
He graduated from Cambridge (Ohio) High School in 1893.
  • Note written in German (1031 KB)
I can't read this note but found it in the David Cline family Bible. It appears to have been written at a later date because I can make out the name of Isaac Cline, his son. If anyone can read this, let me know! It may be just really bad English handwriting.
  • Marriages from Isaac Cline's family Bible (737 KB)
This was from the family Bible for Isaac Cline and Sarah Ann Matson.
  • Walter Matson Cline age 18 with an unkown man (216 KB)
This was taken from his high school graduation photo album. The photo was taken at the C. L. Scott studio in Cambridge, OH. I do not know if the man in the photo is a relative or a close friend. I suspect he may be a relative on the Talbott side of the family because photos of a man who looks similar are in Elizabeth Talbott's Bible (Walter Matson Cline's maternal grandmother). He may be Roger Kirkpatrick, a Talbott cousin with whom he was close.
  • Walter Matson Cline, Jr., in his WWII Navy uniform (386 KB)
He was a Naval flight instructor and this was his flying uniform.
  • Unknown woman from Barnesville, OH (186 KB)
This was taken from Walter Matson Cline's high school graduation photo album. The photo was taken at a photo studio in Barnesville, OH. Two of his Talbott aunts lived in Barnesville and this could be a cousin. It was the only photo in the album taken in Barnesville. There may also have been Cline cousins living in Barnesville at that time.
  • Walter Matson Cline, Jr., and his sister, Sara (882 KB)
This was taken by their father when they were quite young.
  • Walter Matson Cline, Jr., as a child (678 KB)
His father took this photo. He was probably around 6 or 7.
  • Walter Matson Cline around age with an unkown man (186 KB)
This was taken from Walter Matson Cline's high school graduation photo album. The photo was taken at a photo studio in Barnesville, OH. Two of his Talbott aunts lived in Barnesville and this could be a cousin. It was the only photo in the album taken in Barnesville.
  • Walter Matson Cline, Jr., and his cousin Clyde (143 KB)
This was taken from his baby book. Clyde Daniel was the son of Corrie Haley and N. M. Daniel. Corrie was the eldest sister of Walt's mother, Lucy Haley.
  • Bert Caldwell and Barbara Anderson 1945 (280 KB)
This was taken at the wedding of Walter Matson Cline, Jr., and Mary Anderson. Bert was the groom's nephew and Barbara was the bride's cousin.
  • Group of three men from Elizabeth Talbott's Bible (60 KB)
These may be Talbott relatives. Their photo was in the Bible Elizabeth Talbott Burrough gave to her grandson, Walter Matson Cline. I suspect these may by the sons of Nellie Talbott Kirkpatrick, Eliza's niece from her brother Isaac Talbott. If so, the Roger Kirkpatrick would be the boy in the middle.
  • Walter Matson Cline., Jr.'s christening (449 KB)
Also shown are his mother, Lucy Haley and her mother, Cornelia (Cecilia) Jones. The photo was taken by his father, Walter Matson Cline, in Chattanooga.
  • Paul Shields Haley (111 KB)
He was the son of James Franklin Haley and Priscilla Joanna Shields. This photo was sent to me by Leslie Morris.
  • Births from Elizabeth Talbott's Bible (1102 KB)
She listed these in the Bible she gave to her grandson, Walter Matson Cline. I have verified that the date of her parents' marriage is incorrect. They were married April 09, 1794, in Baltimore County, MD, according to the original marriage register for Baltimore.
  • Lucy Haley's wedding photo (206 KB)
This may have been taken by her husband, Walter Matson Cline. It was in Walter Matson Cline, Jr.'s baby book.
  • This is an old Haley family tree, page 1 (224 KB)
This is the only place I have seen James R. Haley's middle name given. This may have been the source Lucy Haley used when she was writing her history of the family for stating that his middle name was Rabun. Apparently, Frances Mildred Haley typed this from a handwritten account by Joanna Shields, James Frankin Haley's wife. James Franklin Haley was the son of Joel Thomas Haley, Sr., and his grandfather was James R. Haley. Note that not all her dates are accurate. Joanna Shields married into the family and was merely able to record what she was told and memories can be faulty. This was sent to me by Leslie Morris.
  • Deaths from Elizabeth Talbott's Bible (943 KB)
This was in the Bible Elizabeth Talbott Burrough gave to her grandson, Walter Matson Cline. The record was not created contemperaneously with the events and the dates should not be assumed to be correct.
  • This is an old Haley family tree, page 2 (248 KB)
Please remember, not all these dates are accurate.
  • Marriages from Elizabeth Talbott's Bible (1042 KB)
This was in the Bible Elizabeth Talbott Burrough gave to her grandson, Walter Matson Cline. The record was not created contemperaneously with the events and the dates should not be assumed to be correct. The date of her parents' marriage was not correct. They were married on April 09, 1794, in Baltimore County, MD, according to the original marriage register for Baltimore.
  • This is an old Haley family tree, page 3 (45 KB)
Please remember, not all these dates are accurate.
  • James Franklin Haley (64 KB)
He was the brother of Joel Thomas Haley, Jr., and the son of Joel Thomas Haley, Sr. Joel, Jr., was the father of Lucy Haley. This was sent to me by Leslie Morris.
  • Births from David Cline's family Bible (1075 KB)
This was taken from the family Bible of David Cline.
  • Group of 2 men from Elizabeth Talbott's Bible (101 KB)
This was in the Bible Elizabeth Talbott Burrough gave to her grandson, Walter Matson Cline. These men probably are Talbott relatives.
  • Man with moustache from Elizabeth Talbott's Bible (23 KB)
This was in the Bible Elizabeth Talbott Burrough gave to her grandson, Walter Matson Cline. He may be a Talbott relative. It may be Roger Kirkpatrick.
  • Isaac Cline (123 KB)
This was in the Bible Elizabeth Talbott Burrough gave to her grandson, Walter Matson Cline. The same photo also appeared in his high school graduation photo album. I have been able to positively identify it as Isaac Cline from other, identified photos of him.
  • Possibly Sarah Ann Matson as a young girl (138 KB)
This was in the Bible Elizabeth Talbott Burrough gave to her grandson, Walter Matson Cline. Initially, I thought it might be Ida Bell Cline, Water's sister. Having seen a later photo of Ida, however, I can tell this definitely is not her. All of the Cline girls had very curly hair. Therefore, I suspect it may be their mother. The Matsons seem to have the very fine hair that this girl has.
  • possibly Sarah Ann Matson (46 KB)
This was in the Bible Elizabeth Talbott Burrough gave to her grandson, Walter Matson Cline. It cannot be any of his sisters given the fact that they all had very curly hair, unlike this woman.
  • Teenage boy from Elizabeth Talbott's Bible (60 KB)
This was in the Bible Elizabeth Talbott Burrough gave to her grandson, Walter Matson Cline. He is probably a Talbott relative, although it is possible he was related to Eliza's second husband who had children from his first marriage.
  • Handsome young man from Elizabeth Talbott's Bible (81 KB)
This was in the Bible Elizabeth Talbott Burrough gave to her grandson, Walter Matson Cline. He is probably a Talbott relative. It may be Roger Kirkpatrick.
  • Possibly Nellie Talbott Kirkpatrick (30 KB)
This was in the Bible Elizabeth Talbott Burrough gave to her grandson, Walter Matson Cline. The Kirkpatrick family was quite close with the Clines and Eliza Burrough. Eliza lived with the Clines and the Kirkpatricks lived nearby in Cambridge, OH.
  • Banks and Vernon and Vernon Marie Haley (246 KB)
This is a photo of Banks Haley and his wife, Vernon, with their daughter Vernon Marie. It was taken at their home in Albany, GA. Banks was the son of Joel Thomas Haley and Cornelia Priscilla Jones. The photo was taken around 1915.
  • Frances Haley and her prize cart (121 KB)
This was in the baby book for Walter Matson Cline, Jr.
