The Clifford family research was done by my grandmother Monona Cordelia (Bailey) Clifford of Auburn, Maine. These paragraphs from her history show the missing link we would like to discover:

"The earliest family of Clifford's in New England, that of George Clifford, was settled in Hampton, New Hampshire, and from him, as the only 17th century immigrant of the name who is know to have left posterity, all of the New England Cliffords' of the earliest times are said to be descended. The only other immigrant of the name before 1700 was John of Lynn, who is said not to have left children.
~
Various branches of this early family of Clifford have been traced in direct line down to the present time, - the middle nineteen hundreds, - and include those of the Clifford name who are residing in New Hampshire towns and those in Maine coming from New Hampshire, who have raised families in Reed Plantation, Wytopitlock and Dover-Foxcroft, where our George C. Clifford (born February 24, 1797) is know to have been resident. However, all of this research has failed to bring out the names of the parents of said George C. Clifford, thus leaving a missing link, even when tracing other direct lines from the same source to Cliffords' residing in Cape Elizabeth, Newfield, South Paris, Lee, Lincoln and Auburn. If sometime the names of these two persons could be found it should be easy, with all the information now at hand, to establish a direct line geneology to the present families residing in Seattle vicinity from this George Clifford who came from England in 1644."
