I have traced the Cliffe line who have lived in and around the Coates Heath area of Staffordshire to a George Cliffe registered in the 1891 census as a Railway Pointsman in the Civil Parish of Standon he had a wife, Fanny and 5 children, one of whom is my Grandfather Reginald, who in the 1901 census is working and living at Styche Hall as a Groom Domestic. George Cliffe and wife Fanny in 1901 are now living in the Hamlet of Bowers and is registered as a Signalman (Railway). Further research has now brought Georges Mother and Father to life, in the 1841 and 1861 Census Records, they are recorded as a James and Hannah Cliffe, both born in 1816 in Fulford, Staffordshire. They look to have had three children, Emma D./Pheobe and George who were all born in Clayton, Staffordshire. The other side of the family are Garside/Vaux/Guy, who are from the Cleckheaton/Leeds area of Yorkshire traced to a John & Ann Garside who were born in 1791 and 6 respectively and he was a Beerhouse Keeper in Cleckheaton, firstly at Lane End, then at the George Hotel, Market Street, formerly called The Nags Head and dates from the 1700's Ann Garside took over the running of the Beerhouse sometime between 1851 and 1861, in the 1861 Census, Ann is shown as the Beerhouse Keeper and her son Samuel is shown as a Brewer, this supposes that the George Hotel had its own Brewery on the premises. |
