OCRACOKERS IN THE CIVIL WAR

The civil war on the Outer Banks was very short lived. North Carolina seceded from the Union on May 20,1861. Aug. 29,1861: Fort Hatteras was captured by Federal troops and shortly afterwards took control of all of the Outer Banks, blocking entrance to Pamlico Sound as well as the Albermarle. The local men fought with the Confederate State Army, also for a very short time. They were not employed in protecting the coast during this war. I found records of only one local resident serving with the Confederate States Navy. My Great Grandfather Christopher O誰eal, a pilot, transferred to the navy on April 3, 1864.

March 14,1862: The Union troops took New Bern after a fierce battle in which most of our Native Ocracoke soldiers took part. It was on this date that all local men with Co.H. deserted or left the 33rd Regt with which they were serving. Their 1st Lieutenant Wilson Tilmon Farrow, also of Ocracoke resigned on the same day. This rises the question; did he resign because all the local men deserted or did all the local men leave because he resigned?

The Outer Bankers did not feel that this was their war, and wanted very little to do with. The only damage done at Ocracoke, other than dismantling the lighthouse, (which was done by the confederates) was the burning of two schools and perhaps a few homes, by the Federal Troops who made a quick survey of Ocracoke Island after the capture of Hatteras.

By mid 1862 the Union had control of the Coastal Sound Counties and New Bern was their headquarters. North Carolina Troops began to desert in large numbers, the greatest reason being to return to the family left behind where the war was causing much hardship, some were starving, others in poor health. The troops saw their friends die at their sides leaving widows and children with no means of support. Some 40,000 North Carolina soldiers died from battle wounds or diseases contracted from the living conditions in both camp and battle field, malnutrition, and neglect. Because of this North Carolina had over 23,000 deserters, some of which returned to duty after finding it impossible to make it home or after returning home and finding the family ok. North Carolina had more deaths in battle than any other Confederate State.

The following information comes from NCST, MOORE担 ROSTWE, VOL 2. NOTE the # of enlistments on Oct. 17, 1861, and the # of desertions on March 14, 1862.
