When Portsmouth came under the command of Union Troops, James W. Davis, Officer In Charge of Station Portsmouth, NC, acting under General Order No. 15, District of the Pamlico, took a survey of all the white males of age to serve their country. On June 18^th 1863 there were thirty-six males between the ages of 18 and 35 years remaining on the Island. Also listed are those already serving at various stations.
