between the ages of 18 and 35 years

When Portsmouth came under the command of Union Troops, James W. Davis, Officer In Charge of Station Portsmouth, NC, acting under General Order No. 15, District of the Pamlico, took a survey of all the white males of age to serve their country. On June 18th 1863 there were thirty-six males between the ages of 18 and 35 years remaining on the Island. Also listed are those already serving at various stations.

(This record was found in The National Archives on microfilmed records of the Civil War, by Mr. Fred Mallison while doing research for his book "The Civil War on the Outer Banks."
