- Dora Anderson Miller descendant of Freed Slave (60 KB)
Ellen, my name is Steven E. Miller and I believe that we are related through slavery. Let me explain... My great grandmother, Dora (Anderson) Miller, born abt.1867 in Henry County, Tennessee is the daughter of Sandy Anderson, born 1825 in Granville County, North Carolina. Sandy Anderson is listed on several 1800 census as a free mulatto. It is strongly believed that Sandy Anderson, among with a long list of free mulattoes descended from the fifteen slaves freed by John Fulcher in 1712. Here is a brief bio of my great grandmother
Dora Anderson Miller, born June 1867 in Henry County, Tennessee, married George Miller in Chattanooga and died in Ohio in 1924. She was the daughter of Sandy Anderson who was born in Granville County, North Carolina, in 1825. She was apparently the descendant of Files (Phillis?) Anderson, born about 1785, who was listed in Sandy's household in the 1880 Henry County census.
The Anderson family of Granville County was freed in 1712 by the Norfolk County, Virginia will of John Fulcher.

- ISNTRUMENTS OF PROTEST (17 KB)
In the early days of shipping, there was no insurance to cover damages and loss of ships or cargo. The Masters of ships, being hundreds of miles from homeport, and having no way to report such damages to the owners would enter port at the nearest courthouse. They would record such damages with the register of deeds, so as to protect themselves from being sued or imprisoned when returning to homeport.
These protests are in most cases the only records of severe storms that hit our coast and of piracy at sea. These records have also been found in private journals, attorney's files, Colonial Records, and loose papers.
