Notes for T
HOMAS CLOUSTON:
Thomas is described as a shy man; confined himself strictly to his own business. He amassed what was counted as considerable wealth in the Orkney of those days – sufficient to set his heirs up once again as travellers on wider paths to varied goals. Such a substantial fortune, in fact, that there even exists a legend of his meeting a notorious witch and insisting that she should give him the benefit of her occult powers, whereupon she promised him that “there should always be a rich Clouston” in future. He was a ship-builder in Stromness. He owned lands at Clouston and Stromness. From some of these properties he received rent. The Cloustons of Smoogro and Nisthouse are descended from him.

Notes for M
ARION MOWATT:
Marion is described as “d/o Hugh Mowat of Swinzie, the Bu of Hoy. Sister of Captain Patrick Mowat, R.N. of Stromness. Aunt of Henry Mowat, Captain, R.N. Admiralty records show him promoted in 1782. In the American War of Independence he incurred sharp criticism (from the Americans) for bombarding the Town of Falmouth, Massachusetts. He finally died on H.M.S. Assistance in 1798. Of the known families from whom the Cloustons are descended on the female side, the Mowats stand out as the race whose blood and example hae most obviously influenced their tastes and destinies, for it cannot have been by accident that the lure of the sea and voyages to distant lands appears sudden and strong in the Cloustons immediately after their intermarriage with the naval Mowats.
