Notes for E
DWARD CLOUSTON:
Edward is described as Captain of Kingshouse & Kirkness. He was captain of his own ship in the Merchant Navy. He was remarkable for his extreme modesty, which in the case of a successful man of affairs, as he was, may be interpreted as a strong dislike for, and shrinking from, any form of self-assertion or publicity. He owned lands in Harray, Birsay, Stromness, Firth, and South Ronaldsay. Kirkness was in Sandwick. He is frequently mentioned in Orcadian documents, and was one of the leading citizens of Stromness in the celebrated lawsuit – Stromness versus Kirkwall.[Clouston2.FBK.FTW]

  Notes for EDWARD CLOUSTON:
Described as Governor of Hudson Bay Company, whose archives state that he bore a remarkably good character. he founded a new “House” in their territories and became second-in-command of one of the forts on the Bay. He retired from Hudson Bay Company in 1798, and returned to Stromness to live as a bachelor of means with a gay reputation (at least two natural sons are on record, according to J. Storer Clouston – however I have been unable to verify these two sons). On his death his property went first to his brother Joseph and upon Joseph’s death to his nephew Robert Clouston (1786 – 1857)
