HOMAS CLOUSTON:
He is described as a Captain. He first served in the young U.S.A. Navy in 1776 as a volunteer in the privateer “Raleigh”; and then in the privateer brig “Dalton”. He was captured by the British and held at Old Mill Prison in Plymouth, England, but he escaped and found his way back across the Atlantic. In 1781 he was appointed Captain of the privateer brig “Antelope”, commissioned by the states of New York and Massachusetts – in her he captured a number of prizes. When the war was over he settled down in Newburyport, Massachusetts as a shipmaster and lecturer on navigation. He had a talent for painting, especially ships, with a vast wealth of precise detail. He was a man who put conscience above inheritance, and became greatly loved in his adopted country.
