Notes for W
ILLIAM CLOUSTON:
On the third day of January, 1818, William Clouston, (21 years of age) embarked at Liverpool, England for New Orleans in the United States of America.

Upon reaching the US, William went directly to the state of Virginia, (now West Va) where he settled and, like his forefathers, became a farmer. He also opened a general store to service other settlers in the area. On May 17, 1821 he married Jane Glass whoes family had immigrated from Belfast Ireland.

At the outbreak of the Civil War - 1861 - a portion of the state of Virginia chose not to secede from the Union, and Virginia was divided into two states West Virginia and Virginia. The division, however, was not actually recorded until July, 1863.

William and Jane contributed so much to the community in which they lived that it was named after them. This area is still today known as the Clouston community.

They donated the land where the church and cemetery are located. He founded the Methodist-Episcopal Church near Cameron, in 1836. There was also a school in this community named for him.

William and Jane had three sons and four daughters, Robert, William M., Martha Ann, James M. Jane, Margaret Ann and Lucinda.

William also owned property in Wheeling, West Va.

There were at least two families of Cloustons in the community at that time. One other was James and his wife, Mariam Gorby. It is not necessarily probable that there was any close relation between the families. The name Clouston in the Orkneys was very common and most Scots and the Irish, when moving to North America, settled either near the state of Virginia or in Canada.[Clouston2.FBK.FTW]
