Notes for J
AMES WILEY CLOUSTON:
James Wiley Clouston sold his share of his father's estate to Mary E. Clouston. (It is interesting to note at this point that J. W.'s father, William, divided his estate instead of leaving it all to the oldest son. Only because of his older brother's death, did he inherit his father's estate.)

In 1879 James Wiley went to Ness County, Kansas with a group of immigrants in covered wagons. They camped their last night near where Bazine, Kansas now is. He settled on homesteads at that time, about five miles west of Bazine, and six miles east of where Ness City now is located.

A short time later, James sent for his wife and two sons, Edward and Wiley. They came on the train with James Wileys mother, Elizabeth. Elizabeth also took out a homestead for James and then, a few years later, returned to her home in West Virginia.

James W. became one of the most active and energetic pioneers of the county, taking an active part in all public affairs and an interest in politics. In 1887 he was elected Sheriff and held that office until 1892.

Their farm was a success and at one time, they owned over six sections of land, all adjoining. The original homesteads were bact-to-back with Elizabeth's being adjacent to highwaly 96 and James W's adjacent to the south.

Family rumors had it, that Lena had divorced J. W. This is supported from information on land deeds dated in December, 1917 Lena was referred to as single in several transactions. However, he had returned home a short time later, ill, and died in 1919 with Lena caring for him.

Records show an actual divorce on March 17, 1917. Then, on March 17, 1920, after J. W. had died, Lena filed to vacate and modify the divorce that she had filed three years earlier, on the grounds of mistakes made in its recording. This would nullify J. W.'s marriage to Leoa Sheaffer, and establish Lena as his widow, and heir, at the time of his death.
