|Hi all, and welcome to my page.
We have gathered together information on our predecessors, all the way back to the year of 1539, during the reign of King Henry VIII. Which is appropriate, since our progenitor, Peter Cloyse was born in that year in Colchester, Essex, England, which is the oldest recorded town in England, as it predates the Domesday Book, started in 1086.
John Cloyes, Peter's grandson, left England for America in 1635, and settled in Watertown, Massachusetts. From there we moved to Wells, Maine, then back to Salem, Massachusetts, where Peter Cloyes married Sarah Towne, one of the infamous "witches" of Salem. Even though she was accused, she was not executed, as was her sister, Rebecca Towne.
After the American Revolution, about 1800 we moved to New York, and settled in Frankfurt, or Frankfurt Hill, Herkimer Co., where the Cloyes Homestead was founded. From there it was a short jump to Utica, then on to Ohio in the 1940's.
There are many other Cloyes lines which are scattered all around America, and there are many different spellings of the Cloyes name. Cloyse, Cloice, Cloys, Clayes, Cloves, are but some of them.
If you have gathered together info on your branch of the Cloyes tree, please drop me a line, and we'll see where there is common ground. If you have found anything that predates 1539, definately let me know, please, as it seems that there is nothing extant before then.
I have just started a Cloyes Family maillist, and all you need to do to join is send email to CLOYES-Lfirstname.lastname@example.org with subscribe in the body of the message, and nothing more. The welcome message will tell you more. This is a public, unmoderated list, so anyone may enjoy it. However, off topic, or abusive posters will be barred from the list.
To see more infomation, click on the link below my email address, and you will be transported to cousin Hugh's home page. Stephanie Walker has a page on this server, also, and it is quite impressive. The URL is: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/w/a/l/Stephanie-J-Walker/index.html Stop by and take a look at it.
This page is dedicated to two individuals whose hard work has resulted in so much information being gathered;
Stephanie Walker and Hugh Cloyes
Thank you for visiting, and good luck in your research. If there is anything that I can do, or you have questions, please respond to my e-mail address.
