* William Clutton of Suffolk, England and Decendants*

Updated August 26, 2008

The family name of CLUTTON derives from the township by that name in Cheshire County, England (West Midlands). Located nine miles southeast of Chester, the village name appears in records from the nine hundreds. Clutton is a location-name (Clod-hill, Ton-town) and, due to low literacy among people of the time, variations of the spelling show up in records (e.g., Clutton, Clutten, etc). Some records show both dominate spellings for the same individual, making positive tracking confusing and difficult.

The ancient line of the Cluttons, located in Cheshire, traces back to Baron Roger de Clutton, living under the rein of Henry III (1216-1272). A Coat-of-Arms was granted, and is still maintained by Rafe Clutton, residing in Sussex, England. Although positive documentation is scare as to when members of this old-line went to Suffolk, evidence suggests that a son of William Clutton (Clutten) journeyed to Fressingfield, Suffolk.

According to family notes and lore, a branch of the Cluttons established itself in Suffolk when William Clutton (a carpenter and son of William Clutton, then of the Lords of the Manor of Chorlton Old Hall in Coddington, Cheshire), met and married a Suffolk girl (Martha Aldous) while working a church renovation in Fressingfield with his brother . William and Martha settled a farm in Fressingfield around 1672.

I'm descended from the Cluttons of Suffolk, England. Our family emmigrated from Suffolk County, England to southern Ontario, Canada in 1871 (principally Aylmer). This line emigrated once again in the 1890s, when my great-great grandfather came to the United States by way of Detroit, MI.

I invite any interested Family member to contact me in an effort to increase the knowledge regarding the Clutton's heritage. Much research has been accomplished through the efforts of William David Clutton, my Canadian cousin. He may be reached at P O Box 711, Watford, ON N0M 2S0. (The Canadian descendants hold a family reunion each year around Father's Day in Waterloo, Ontario.)
