William Clutton of Suffolk, England and Decendants
The family name of CLUTTON derives from the township by that name in Cheshire County, England (West Midlands). Located nine miles southeast of Chester, the village name appears in records from the nine hundreds. Clutton is a location-name (Clod-hill, Ton-town) and, due to low literacy among people of the time, variations of the spelling show up in records (e.g., Clutton, Clutten, etc). Some records show both dominate spellings for the same individual, making positive tracking confusing and difficult. |
