The information on this webpage was created and is being updated with the ongoing research of the Coats/Coates family from the 1790-1930 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and neighboring states censuses, along with spoken family history, internet, archive, and cemetery research . The Civil War pension files of William Henry Harrison Coats and his half-brother Richard L. Sanford have also been invaluable sources of information, as well as the War of 1812 pension file of W.H.H. Coats' father Thomas Coats, Jr.. The Coats/Coates spelling seems to be interchangeable throughout past centuries, and is reflected as such. The starting point for this research began with my Great-Great Grandfather William Henry Harrison Coats. My brother Steve and I, along with our father Samuel C. Coates III, have compiled and supplied the information on this page. Thanks also to Renee Larrimore, Bonnie Pratt, Sam and Grace Coates, Charlie Coates, and all of the other cousins from various branches that have helped with this family tree. Special thanks to cousins Carolyn Headley and Ida Marino for many great family pictures.
