| The information on this webpage was created and is being updated with the ongoing research of the Coats/Coates family from the 1790-1930 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and neighboring states censuses, along with spoken family history, internet, archive, newspaper and cemetery research. The Civil War pension files of William Henry Harrison Coats and his half-brother Richard L. Sanford have also been invaluable sources of information, as well as the War of 1812 pension file of W.H.H. Coats' father Thomas Coats IV (shown as Thomas Coats Jr. in the pension file). The Coats/Coates spelling seems to be interchangeable throughout past centuries, and is reflected as such. This Coats/Coates line is traced back to the early Philadelphia "Brickmaker" Coats family, who traveled from England to Philadelphia in the early 1700's and were popular and preferred brickmakers who helped build the then new city. The starting point for this research began with my Great-Great Grandfather William Henry Harrison Coats. My brother Steve and I, along with our father Samuel C. Coates III, have compiled and supplied the information on this page. Thanks also to Renee Larrimore, Bonnie Pratt, Sam and Grace Coates, Charlie Coates, Susan McIntire, and all of the other cousins from various branches who have helped with this family tree. Special thanks to cousins Carolyn Headley and Ida Marino for many great family pictures. Any pertinent additions/corrections to this site are welcomed. *Due to restrictions (Family Tree Maker has 2000 names maximum upload), in order to fit new Coats/Coates information in this tree a large amount of Conrad, Shertz, Shuffelbottom, Tshudy, and the information gathered from their corresponding families of Lancaster, Pennsylvania had to be sacrificed from this site.
