Peter & Vicky Coates Home PageUpdated January 1, 2001 | |
| Since our update of the 5th September 2000 we have now with the help of a researcher in Germany been able to trace the origins of our branch of the Dilger family back to the christening of Josef Dilger in 1663 in St. Peter Ränke, he was the son of Leonhard Dilger & Ursula Laule (details unknown). As for the Wursthorn branch research has revealed Jakob Wursthorn christened 10 - 02 - 1735 in Breitnau, Fahrenberg, Freiburg, Baden, Germany and was the son of Georg Wursthorn (mother and other details unknown. John Westhorn Dilger was born in Waldau, Freiburg, Baden, Germany on 5th May 1818 his mother being Rosina Dilger who married Christian Wursthorn on 25th May 1827 in Breitnau, freiburg, Baden. Christain regognised John as his son at his christening on the 10th May 1818 and so was christened Johann Wursthorn So now we understand in part the implications for the name changes from Westhorn to Dilger, Johann travelled to England as is recorded in the 1841 Northampton census as John Westorn. He settled in Northampton as a German clockmaker then moved to Derby for a while and then travelled to Sheffield in Yorkshire where he set up and ran a successful clock and watch making business. The business survived untill the 1940's. In 1851 John Westhorn married an English girl Lucy Lowe in Derby. Lucy Lowe was born in 1831 in Silsoe, Bedfordshire. They changed their surname from Westhorn to Dilger when they moved to Sheffield from Derby in 1865. We would dearly love to find evidence of Johan Westhorn before he settled in England or even of the Westhorn name. We can let any one interested know of the decendency since he arrived in England. At the moment we are most interested in the following names & places:- Dilger in Sheffield, England - 1860's to date Dilger in Freiburg area of Germany - Pre 1850's Johan (John) Westhorn in Derby, England - 1851 to 1865 Wursthorn name in Germany Attached is the kinship of Vicky please feel free to browse the information, any further information would be appreciated. We are willing to share the information we have. Now we are on the trail of the names Gilligan and Coates and would be interested to hear from any one with similar interests in any of the names on the attached Kinships. |
