The origins of the Cockburns undoubtedly lie in the county ofBerwickshire, which is in the unrecorded past. It is almost certain that they came with the Normans led by William the Conquerer. They were given land in Berwickshire. The first Cockburn to appear on record was Sir Piers de Cockburn, who, in 1296 signed a charter. It is almost certain that his son was Alexander Cockburn who married Mariota de Veteri Ponte in 1330.Mariota was heiress to Langton, Berwickshire, Bolton near Haddington, East Lothian and Carriden, Linlithgow. West Lothian. They settled in Langton, Berwickshire. All modern branches are descended from Langton. COCKBURN OF THE ILK. The first Cockburn of the Ilk was William, second son of Sir Wiliam Cockburn of Langton. The lands of the Ilk were situated on Cockburn Law near Duns in Berwickshire. William Cockburn purchased Cockburn Law in 1527. |
