The Codlings of Canada/Michigan

Updated February 18, 2007

Hi!
I am researching the Codling Family in the United States. My earliest information is that my great-great-grandparents are Elijah and Mary Ann Chesney, who married in Blenheim Twp. in Ontario, Canada. Their son Stephen Codling married Phebe Hersee in Drumbo, Ontario, in the 1860s. They emigrated to the United States via Duluth, Minn., moving on to the Dakota territories near Valley City and several years later moving to Gladwin, Mich. One of their daughters, Bertha, was born in the Dakotas.
Their son Charles was my grandfather, born in 1876 while the family was still in Canada. He married Lovina Amanda Hackett, daughter of Josiah P. Hackett and Emma Hill Hackett. They had five children, four of whom lived to adulthood, including my father, Paul Emmett Codling, who was born in 1917 and died in 1994.I am also interested in finding Hackett descendents. My great-grandfather Josiah was a soldier in the U.S Infantry during the Civil War. I have a photo of him in uniform and about 36 of the letters he wrote home to his parents while on his first tour of duty. His brothers, Gilbert and Henry, also served.
