Notes for Joseph O. Rooks:

Joseph O. Rooks was born in a log cabin on Mar 16, 1846 at Unionville, Putnam Co.,
MO. At the age of fifteen he ran away from home and joined the army. He fought with the
North in Co. M of the Seventh Missouri Calvary during the Civil War as a private. He
enlisted on the tenth of August in 1861 and was honorable discharged on Feb 29 1864.

Joseph later lived on the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian reservations in South Dakota and
engaged in the stock business of handling cattle and horses. He was present at the Indian
Council held at Fort Laramie in April 1868 and actually signed the Laramie Treaty of 1868
between the US and the Sioux Indians. The Oglala were led by the Lakota Sioux Chief,
Red Cloud, who signed the treaty with General William Sherman of the US Army at Fort
Laramie, WY. This pact ended two years of fighting.

In Joseph's pension records, he describes himself at 5 feet 10 inches tall, 190 pounds with
"gray, formerly auburn" hair. After discharge from the military, Joseph went west with a
group of pioneers and settled on Boxelder Creek which was twenty-six miles south of
Cheyenne, WY. He freighted from Denver, CO to Deadwood, SD from about 1866 to
1880. He was first married to Faun Tingaliska for whom he traded a horse which was the
custom. Tingaliska was a full-blooded Sioux Indian woman. Nothing is known about her
family. They were married in December of 1866 at the E. W. Whitcombs ranch on
Boxelder Creek. Their three children were Joseph, Jr., Susie and Frank. Tingaliska died in
April of 1872 at the mouth of Ash Creek near Fort Robinson.

On February 22, 1873, Joseph married Kate Robinson at the Spotted Tail Agency near Fort Robinson, NE. They were married by Acting Agent Robert Cox. Later they were remarried by Reverend Hinman because at the time of their marriage there was "no Episcopal Minister anywhere in Indian country."

Kate felt she would like to be married by a minister of her chosen faith
and asked that a religious marriage ceremony be performed (this information from her
widow pension papers.) Katharine Robinson was a mixed blood Indian woman of the
Sioux Tribe and a member of the Pine Ridge branch of that tribe. Joseph and Kate raised
the three small children from his first marriage. They had fifteen children of their own.

While living on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Joseph became a Pony Express rider in the
Black Hills. He served as the first Boss Farmer of Allen, SD in the 1870's. During the time
he was Boss Farmer, he lived at Corn Creek Commissary. The community of Allen was
one of the earliest population centers of Bennett Co. Government affairs were directed by
the Boss Farmer. At this time, white men were not allowed to live on the Reservation, but
because Kate was an Indian they settled on her allotment, SE 1/4 of Section 5, Township
43, Range 34. They operated a ranch of over two thousand cattle and two hundred and
fifty horses. He branded JOR on the left hip of his cattle.
