1. JOHN WILLIAM¹ SMITH was born August 02, 1832 in St. Helena Parish, LA ¹, and died November 05, 1905 in Ponchatoula, Tangipahoa Parish, LA ². He married LENORA E. LEE September 02, 1853 in Liberty, Amite Co., MS ³. She was born Abt. 1838 in Louisiana, and died 1908 in Louisiana.

Notes for JOHN WILLIAM SMITH:
Enlisted in Co. H., 27th La. Reg., Captain John T. Spencer, Commanding. Was slightly wounded in a leg during Siege of Vicksburg. Smith replied that he was at Liberty, Mississippi on detail at the surrender. In responsed to another pension application question, Smith reported that he was at the surrender of Vicksburg, was paroled and released to his regiment. He said that he did not take the oath of allegiance to the US Government.

When asked how many children, and what sex they were, Smith replied that he and his wife had one boy and four girls!

There is a John W. Smith enumerated in the 1850 St. Helena Parish, LA census with the James L. Belue family. The family is found in the Eastern District, p181, dwelling/family 69, and includes: James L. Belue, age 37, farmer, born LA; Mary Belue, age 10, born LA; Edward Wales, age 80, farmer, born SC; Elizabeth Wales, age 60, born NC, and John W. Smith, age 17, born LA. John is the right age to have been born in 1833.
