Notes for Homer Earnst Coffey: Homer Ernest Coffey was born in Douglas Co. Illinois, I believe in the yr 1863. He was the second oldest of 5 children born to the union of Susan Harriet Miller and Adolphus Coffey. H.W. Coffey (Walter), H.E. (Homer), Minnie H, E.M.(Ezra) and lastly E.C.(Kati) is how they are listed in 1870 Federal census of Tuscola Twp, Douglas Co. Illinois. Sometime in the early 1870`s, Susan Harriet Coffey dies and is buried in the Bethel Coffey Cemetary, Elletsville, Indiana Homer turns up in the 1880 census living at the home of Asbury Coffey in Owen Co. Indiana. Asbury probably being a distant cousin. At this peroid I cannot confirm the wereabouts of either Walter or Ezra, the girls appear to be with Adolphus and his 2nd wife Susan F. (Stoneman) and their children There is speculation that sometime in the early 1880`s Walter set out for California, if Homer and he traveled together I don`t know! but Walter apparently was killed sometime in 1882 in Calif. Homer turns up next in The federal census of 1900 in Calif. He is now married to Ina (Inez Sproul) of Kansas. It appears they meet and married in the late 1880`s. I do know their 1`st born Walter Floyd (my grandfather) was born in Santa Paula, Ventura Co. in 1889. They must have lived in Santa Paula for a few years as several of the children ( Fred, Harlie and Leonard ) all list Santa Paula as place of birth. Homer seems to have worked as a carpenter threw these years.
