Email from Marian Russell:
Mr. Collins, I am the gggranddaughter of Thomas P. Bowie who married
Nancy M. Staples Oct. 2 1838 in Lauderdale County, Ala. Charles Wesley
Bowie was his brother. Nancy was born in ALA. according to census of
Lawrence County, Ala.1850. To my knowledge we are not in any way
connected to the Jim Bowie line. As I understand it Jim Bowie was of the
Maryland Bowies. I always suspected that my line was from the Scotsman
Major John Bowie. I have not yet found the parents of my Thomas. Thomas
and Nancy's children were as follows:
Twins John T. and Thomas I. Bowie b.1839, Charles Wesley Bowie b. 1842,
James Knox Polk Bowie b. May 7 1845(my ggrandfather), Mary C. M. Bowie
b. 1850 If you ever find a clue to the parents of these people I would
be very grateful to you if you would pass it on to me. email address

iii.   Elizabeth Bowie, born Abt. 1820; married Alfred McMeans Jan 1840 in Lauderdale Co., AL; born Abt. 1818.
  Notes for Elizabeth Bowie:
Message From David C. McMeans:

I believe Charles Wesley Bowie (1815) married Elizabeth J. Romine (1823)
to be a brother or cousin to the following women of Lauderdale county, AL.
Elizabeth Bowie marr Alfred McMeans 1840 (My GrGrGrGrandfather)
Catharine Bowie marr Samuel McMeans 1841
Nancy Bowie marr Daniel Harrison McMeans 1847

All marriages were in Lauderdale county, AL. Elizabeth (Bowie) McMeans
named her first son Charles Wesley McMeans (1843), probably after her
brother Charles Wesley Bowie (1815). The Bowie families (Charles and
Thomas) lived near the McMeans in Lauderdale county ca. 1830. Alfred and
Elizabeth (Bowie) McMeans are buried at Hopewell church in Alcorn county, MS
along with Charles Wesley and Elizabeth (Romine) Bowie. My research notes
that Charles Wesley Bowie was probably the son of Charles Bowie of SC.
Hope this info is beneficial.

I am a desc of John Layton Romine and Margaret A. Bowie. John is a desc of Wm Romine and Mary Callahan. Wm's parents are Layton Romine and Rose Canterbury. Layton was married twice and had 24 children. John had 3 girls so named one of them William - my great-grand mother Willie. Later he had a son who died as a young child. I have info on the Romines but nothing on the Bowies.

Dan and Glenda,
Thanks for the reply. I would be very interested in getting a photo-copy of the original marraige records of my ancestors! Do you have info on the siblings of John? I'd be glad to send you whatever is of interest.
This is the info I have on John Layton Romine and Margaret A. Bowie:
(Altho your info says John 'S' instead of John 'L', I think it's the same one - they would look very similar in the old script letters.)
John - b. Sep 17, 1827 Rogersville, AL; m. Nov 22, 1848; d. Sep 11, 1875 MO.
Margaret - b. Apr 27, 1830; d. July 7, 1902 MO. Sister named Sarah b abt 1826
Ch - Mary A. b. 1849; Charles T. b. June 21, 1852, d. Feb 20, 1856 MS; Margarette E. b Nov 11, 1855, m. unk Norman, d. May 12, 1928; Frances "Fannie" M., b. 1859, m Elijah "Lige" Baker bef 1880, d. in MO; Martha J. b. July 2, 1863, d. Aug 22, 1872; William "Willie" (female) Asberry b. Feb 15, 1866 Dunklin Co., MO, m Charels Edward Smith Dec 14, 1884 Senath, MO, d. Jan 1944, Montebello, CA.; John B. b. May 10, 1868, d. Oct 26, 1875.
In the 1880 Dunklin Co census I found Margaret Bowie Romine age 50 living with her dau Margaret E. Norman age 25, her granddau Mary Norman age 6, her dau (my great-grm) Willie age 14, her sister Sarah age 54. There are NO men in the household then or in 1900 when Margaret (who lists 7 births and 3 living children) with divorced dau Elizabeth M. Romine who lists 1 birth but no living children, and granddaughter Elizabeth S. Norman, age 9. The children Mary and Elizabeth do not appear to be the same person, but Eliz M and Marg E could be - both daus of Margaret and with same birth year.
I have a photo of me as a tiny baby sitting in the lap of my Great Aunt Fannie Romine Baker in Montebello, CA.
