According to the 1850 Census, he lived with his brother William Jackson Thompson and family in Washington, County, Kentucky. His age was listed as 21. His mother had died in 1849 and his father had died in 1842.
Hubbard helped move his brother William's family from Kentucky to Indiana in 1854. After William died in 1856, Hubbard became the acting head of the household. In 1858 he married William's widowed wife, Martha Beam Thompson, and became stepfather of his brother's children.
According to the 1860 Census, Hubbard was listed as farming and his age is listed as 39 and birth place listed as Kentucky. The age given for Hubbard appears to be too old compared to the age given in 1850 and is believed to be an error by the census taker. Most likely, Hubbard's actual age was probably closer to 30 years old. The youngest child, Douglass, listed on the 1860 Census was Hubbard's and Martha's child together.
After Martha died in 1861, Hubbard remarried to Elizabeth Beauchamp in 1862. It's assumed that his brother's children became a part of his new family.
According to the Jackson Township Subscribers Of The1874 Parke County, Indiana Atlas, HubbardThompson was a farmer living in Section 30 of the township who was orginally from Nelson County, Kentucky and came to Parke County in 1854.

Neither Douglass or Albert J. are found listed on later family census records for Hubbard Thompson's family.
