He married Hannah Isabelle Elson 09 Oct 1881 in Parke County, Indiana. She was born Jan 1864 in Indiana, and died 13 Nov 1912 in Raccoon Twp., Parke County, Indiana.

According to the 1880 Census, George W. was listed as a laborer working for the family of Joseph S. Humphrey in Raccoon Twp., Parke County, Indiana. George is listed as age 20 and born in Indiana. Both of George's parents are listed as being born in Kentucky.

According to cemetery records, George's age at death was 28 years and 25 days and his date of death was 1/11/1888. This calculates his date of birth as December 17, 1859 which is consistent with census records found for him.

William's mother Maranda is listed as M. A. Shonkwiler who is listed as age 69, born in October 1830 and a widow. Maranda is listed as the mother of 5 children and 2 were living. All in the household except for William's mother Maranda are listed as being born in Indiana. Maranda is listed as being born in Kentucky. William's parents are listed as being born in Kentucky. Hannah's parents are listed as being born in Ohio. Maranda Shonkwiler's father is listed as being born in Kentucky and there was no entry for the birthplace of her mother.

1900 CENSUS NOTES:
Son John is the son of William's deceased brother George and wife Hannah in her first marriage so William is both step father and uncle to John Thompson. Hannah is listed as the mother of 4 children and all were living but only three children were listed. This isn't a census error as Hannah's fourth child and oldesr child with George Thompson in her first marriage is listed on the 1910 family census, but wasn't living with the family in 1900. The two youngest sons are William and Hannah's children. "M. A." or Maranda Shonkwiler is William Thompson's mother who remarried to Daniel Shonkwiler in 1879 after the death of William's father James Thompson.

According to the 1910 Census, the family was still living in Raccoon Twp., Parke County, Indiana. William is listed as age 45 and farming. Hannah is also listed as age 45. William and Hannah are listed as having been married 20 years. It was indicated that this was William's first marriage and Hannah's second marriage. Hannah is listed as the mother of 4 children and all were living. Step daughter Mabel Thompson is listed as age 27. Son William is listed as age 15. All are listed as being born in Indiana. William's parents are listed as being born in Kentucky. Hannah's parents are listed as being born in Ohio.

1910 CENSUS NOTES:
Step daughter Mabel is the daughter of William's deceased brother George and Hannah in her first marriage so William is both step father and uncle to Mabel Thompson.

According to the 1910 Census, Albert was a hired hand living with the John Garrigus family in Florida Twp., Parke County, Indiana. Albert is listed as age 17 and a farm laborer. Both Albert and his parents are listed as being born in Indiana.

      41. William Allan3 Thompson (Thomas Allen2, Thomas L.1) was born 22 Sep 1841 in Nelson County, Kentucky, and died 04 Mar 1923 in Fairview, Major County, Oklahoma. He married Mary Ann Murphy 06 Oct 1864 in Montgomery County, Indiana, daughter of James Murphy and Lidia Ann. She was born 17 Jul 1846 in Montgomery County, Indiana, and died 24 May 1939 in Fairview, Major County, Oklahoma.

Notes for William Allan Thompson:
His family moved to Parke County, Indiana when he was a boy. With the outbreak of the war between the states, William enlisted in the 38th Indiana Infantry Regiment. He was in the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee in April 1862 and had one ear shot off by a sharpshooter. He served until February 7, 1863.
On December 22, 1863, he re-enlisted joining the 40th Indiana Infantry Regiment. It was during the time that he was a member of this regiment, that he came home to his parent's farm in Parke County, Indiana while on furlough and met his future wife, Mary Murphy. He was honorably discharged on December 21, 1865.

Notes for Mary Ann Murphy:
She was orphaned and lived with William's parents Thomas and Sarah Talbott Thompson. William met Mary while on furlough during the Civil War and married Mary.

Mary had come to live with Thomas and Sarah Thompson sometime before 1864. Mary's parents from Montgomery County, Indiana apparently knew the Thompson's at some point and had both passed away leaving Mary and her siblings orphaned at an early age. Relatives and friends took the children in and Mary was able to earn her keep doing housework for those who befriended her. It was at this instance that she came to be living with the Thompson's and that was how William met Mary. After they were married, Mary stayed with Thomas and Sarah Thompson until the end of the war while William returned to duty.

Marriage Notes for William Thompson and Mary Murphy:
Their marriage record dated 10/6/1864 is located in Book 6, Page 256 for Montgomery County, Indiana. A previous date of 10/20/1864 from Parke County, Indiana is believed to be incorrect or possibly the marriage license was granted in Montgomery County on the earlier date and the wedding ceremony was performed later in the month in Parke County, or vice versa.

Sometime between 1867 and 1868, the family moved from Parke County, Indiana to Iowa. Their third son Joseph was born in Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa in 1870. According to James Wilkinson, the family moved to Norton County, Kansas in 1882. Most of the family came to Major County, Oklahoma shortly before statehood which was in 1907. Others of the family came to Major County, Oklahoma after 1907. Some of the family stayed in Kansas or moved elsewhere. Alice and Allen both died in infancy.

According to the 1870 Census, the family was living in Graham Township, Johnson County, Iowa. William is recorded as working on a farm and his age was 29. Mary Ann was keeping house and her age was 24. Son James is listed as age 3 and son George is listed as age 1. William. Mary Ann and son James are recorded as being born in Indiana. The place of birth entry for William is incorrect and should have been listed as Kentucky. Son George is recorded as being born in Iowa.

According to the 1880 Census, the family was living in Morse Station, Johnson County, Iowa. William worked as a section hand on the railroad and his age was 39. Mary Ann was keeping house and her age was 33. Son James is listed as age 13, son George is listed as age 11, son Joseph is listed as age 9, daughter Elizabeth is listed as age 6, daughter Nettie is listed as age 3 and daughter Alice is listed as age 2. William is listed as being born in Kentucky. Mary Ann and son James are listed as being born in Indiana. All of the other children are listed as being born in Iowa. William's parents, Thomas and Sarah, are recorded as being born in Kentucky. From earlier census returns for William's mother, it's believed that his mother Sarah Talbott was born in Indiana.

Sometime between 1880 and 1885, the family moved from Iowa to Kansas.

According to the 1885 Kansas State Census, the family was living in Grant Twp., Norton County, Kansas. William is listed as W. A. and is listed as age 43. Mary is listed as age 39. Son James is listed as age 18. Son George is listed as age 16. Son Joseph is listed as age 13. Daughter Ada B. is listed as age 11 months.

1885 KANSAS STATE CENSUS NOTES:
The family is listed on Page 5 of the census for Norton County. Daughters Susan Elizabeth and Mary Nettie are not found listed. Both are known to have been living at this time. Susan would have been about age 12 and Mary would have been about age 11.
The census records were all hand written and known to be very hard to read. There were questionable spellings along with names that could not be deciphered. This may explain why the two daughters were not found listed.
William's brother James and family were also living in Grant Township during this time. Brother John and family were living nearby in Lincoln Township during this time.

According to the 1900 Census, the family was living in Highland Twp., Norton County, Kansas. The family census is listed on page 493B. William is listed as age 59 and a farmer. He was born in Sept. 1841. Mary is listed as age 54. She was born in July 1846. Son Roy is listed as age 13 and a farm laborer. He was born in Aug. 1886. William and Mary are listed as having been married 30 years. Mary is listed as the mother of nine children and eight were living. William and his parents are listed as being born in Kentucky. Mary and her father are listed as being born in Indiana. Mary's mother is listed as being born in Ohio.

According to the 1910 Census, the family still lived in Highland Twp., Norton County, Kansas. William is listed as age 68 and a farmer. Mary is listed as age 63. Grandson Emil Thompson (son of George) is listed as age 5. William and Mary are listed as having been married 40 years. Mary is listed as the mother of nine children and seven were living. William and his father are listed as being born in Kentucky. William's mother is listed as being born in Indiana. Mary is listed as being born in Indiana. Mary's parents are listed as being born in Ohio. Grandson Emil and his parents are listed as being born in Iowa. Son Joseph and family lived next door.

According to the 1920 Census, William and Mary were living with son Joseph and family in Dane Twp., Major County, Oklahoma. William A. is listed as age 78 and retired. Mary A. is listed as age 73. William is listed as being born in Kentucky and Mary is listed as being born in Indiana. William's father is listed as being born in Kentucky and his mother in Indiana. Mary's parents are listed as being born in Ohio.

  Notes for Susan Elizabeth Thompson:
Also known as Lizzie or Elizabeth when younger. She made her home in Washington or Idaho for a time after marriage and became a minister in the Nazarene Church. She was called Sister Felter and was revered by many in the area when she lived in the Cedar Springs, Oklahoma area.

  Marriage Notes for Susan Thompson and Unknown Felter:
It's not known for sure when they married. No 1900 Census records have been found for them.
