Tombstone located at what is now known as the Goben Cemetery in Oregon Township, Clark County, Indiana. The site of the cemetery is near what used to be the former Goben homestead, one mile north of the town of Otisco. William was born in 1758 in Pennsylvania. During the Revolutionary War, he served from 1776 to 1779 in the 8th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Line in George Washington's Army. He died on February 26, 1842 in Clark County, Indiana. These are the parents of 2nd Great Grandfather Andrew Peterson. Picture was taken at the studio of John Nilsson in Kalmar, Sweden. It is believed that the immigration authorities inadvertantly changed Andrew's last name for him as he neither spoke or understood English when he arrived. He was the son of Peter hence the immigration authorities named him Andrew Peterson. Andrew's parents stayed in Sweden. His father's name is Peter Olsson but his mother's name is not yet known. The next gentleman is listed as Harry Gardner and may have been an employee at the hotel. The gentleman to the right of Harry Gardner is unidentified. The next gentleman is identified as Bill Marmaduke, the future husband of Bert Thompson's daughter Charlotte Blanche. Bill Marmaduke was probably also working at the hotel at that time. The last man on the end in the back row is unidentified. The boy on the left in the front row is believed to be Bert & Addie Thompson's son, Great Granduncle Thomas Allen who would have been about 13 or 14 years old at that time. The lady in the middle in the front row is believed to be Great Grandmother Daisy Abbott Thompson, age 16. Husband George is standing behind and a little to the left of her. George & Daisy were married in September 1904. The lady on the right in the front row is Bert & Addie Thompson's oldest daughter, Great Grandaunt Charlotte Blanche who would have been about 22 years old. Blanche's future husband (in 1914), Bill Marmaduke is standing behind and to the right of Blanche. The Thompson family is known to have been the proprietor's of the hotel as late as 1908. After that date, Bill Marmaduke took over the ownership. This farm of Great Grandfather Ray Oswalt was located in Jackson Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana on County Road South 625 West. Oldest son Cleon and wife Hazel Griffin Oswalt lived across the road from where it once stood. The farm house and buildings were torn down in the early 1970's. Standing behind him 2nd from the right is believed to be 2nd Great Grandfather Joseph Layton. The steam traction tractor in the background is believed to have been one of the first available in the area and probably CO-OP owned and used by farmers in the area for threshing operations. Great Grandaunt Verbie Oswalt (1886-1912) was the only daughter of 2nd Great Grandparents John Wesley Oswalt and Eliza Masterson Oswalt. Sadly, she died at the early age of 25 before she could fulfill her lifes destinys but her beauty is still a timeless treasure, a gift of an earlier period of time. Cleon married Hazel Lucille Griffin (1908-2002) on September 15, 1930 in Jackson Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. Together they are the parents of four children with six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Picture was taken circa 1960's. This building was formerly the schoolhouse in Independence, Warren County, Indiana and was built in 1908. The grocery store was started in 1956 by Albert Ray Oswalt (1894-1968) and his sons Roxford and Edward. Albert was a son of Emanuel Oswalt and Grandson of Benjamin and Rebecca Oswalt. The store continued in the family till after son Roxford died, about 1982. James R. Thompson (1844-?) was the second oldest child of 3rd Great Grandparents Thomas A. (1823-1879) and Sarah Talbott Thompson (1824-1879). James was a veteran of the Civil War and lost his left leg during the conflict. James and wife Margaret (1846-?) are listed in census records as the parents of from two to four children who are believed to have died before they reached adulthood according to census records. Their daughter, Mary Z. (1871- bef 1900) is believed to be standing to the right of James.
