Descendants of John Carden

      124. Doll C.4 Carden (Henry3, Andrew Jackson2, John1) was born 21 Sep 1875 in Monroe Co., Georgia, and died 29 Apr 1959 in Carroll Co., Georgia. He married Ella Mae Carden 24 Dec 1901 in Paulding Co., Georgia, daughter of Andrew Carden Jr. and Nancy Blissitt. She was born 13 Sep 1877 in Paulding Co., Georgia, and died 15 Nov 1949 in Paulding Co., Georgia.

Notes for Doll C. Carden:
Doll C. Carden gave the following interview to Hubert Parker. Hubert parker was his nephew, son of Carrie Parker who lived in Texas.

July 1954, interview with Doll C. Carden, Hubert's uncle. He was 80 years old and lived in Villa Rica, Georgia. He went with us to the Smyrna Cemetery and told me the following: There were seven Carden boys that came to America from Ireland. Andrew J. ("Jack") Carden came to Georgia while the Indians were still here --- was one of the first settlers. He had a home in Pike Co. and was a farmer. This was where all of his children were born and some of his grandchildren, too. He was Section Foreman on the Southern Railroad, the first railroad built in Georgia -- from Atlanta to Savannah. He was living at the home-place during the Civil War. There was fighting on the old home-place during the war. They derailed the train there. The cars were filled with dried peas that we were trying to get to our men down south. They were starving, just about. When those railroad cars turned over dried peas went everywhere and our cows ate them. Those cows bursted when those dried peas swelled. Killed all 'em and left the family without any milk. Grandpa, Jack Carden, wasn't killed in the war. He dropped dead at the creek, a'fishing. He is buried at Liberty Hill, in Pike Co., in the old Carden Cemetery. His wife, Adline Crawford Carden is buried at the same place. That's near the new Goggins Station on the railroad. Adeline and Jack Carden had eight children: Tom, John, Henry, Buck, Catherine, Becky, Mary and Andrew. Henry Carden, my father, married Molly Blissitt, my mother. He was born in Pike Co., and she was born in Monroe Co. He was buried in Monroe Co., Georgia. (Uncle Doll had previously said that his father died and was buried near Atlanta??). Molly, my mother, was buried at Smyrna Cemetery, up near Dallas, Paulding Co. Mamie was 12 yrs old when our father died. I don't know my parent's birthdays; they were about the same age. They had seven children. They were: Dave J., Doll C., Carrie, Sam, Mamie, Matt and Annie. Grandfather, William Blissitt, married Nettie (Mary Antionette) Burt. He was a Baptist preacher, educated and wrote a beautiful hand. All of his brother's (4) enlisted at the start of the war but he preached a year before he enlisted. He went to Griffin, Georgia, and had his Confederate suit tailor-made. Molly was a baby when he left home for the war. They had 4 children: Sally, Bud, Molly and Annie. They were all born in the same house, same as all of Molly Carden's children (that is me and my brother's and sister's)-- in Monroe Co. During the war Grandmother Blissitt buried her meat under the smokehouse to save it, when the Union soldiers came. They killed all the stock and burned the outhouses . William S. Blissitt died in Virginia and was buried there. Aunt Nan, grandma's sister, lived with her. They were Burt's. Bud Blissitt married Liza Mattock (Maddock?). Sally married John Carden; Nancy Annette (Annie) married Andrew J. Carden; Molly (Marian B.) married Henry Carden. The Carden's were brothers, sons of Jack (Andrew J.) and Adline. Aunt Annie and Uncle Andrew had eight children: Della and Ella were twins. I married Ella and Della married Marcus E. Caldwell; both are buried at Smyrna Cemetery. Nan Carden married Walt Cole. He is still living in Anniston, Alabama Jack Carden lives at Rockmart, Georgia. Bradley Carden married Will Cole, then remarried a Mr. Fuller and lives in New Jersey. Ab Carden is buried at Smyrna. Mary Carden married Charlie Smith. He is buried at Smyrna and she lives in Anniston, Alabama. I have told this the best I can remember it. Doll C. Carden, July 1954

Notes for Calvin Edgar Atkins:
Mr. Cal Atkins, was born April 11, 1886, and sweetly fell asleep in Jesus Sept. 13, 1918. He was united in marriage to Miss Annie Carden May 3, 1908. Their union was blessed with 4 girls and 2 boys. He professed a hope in Christ and joined Antioch Baptist Church in August, 1908, and lived a consecrated Christian life until God called him home to rest with those he loved so well that had gone on before. He bore his sufferings with patience and said that he was only waiting for Godís will to be done. I can say to his bereaved wife and children not to mourn, for he is not dead but only sleeping that sweet sleep that our dear Savior slept, and some day you all can join him. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to the sick and needy in any way he could, but how my heart goes out for his wife and children. He left an aged father and mother and 4 brothers, a loving wife and six children. He was laid to rest at Antioch in the presence of a large number of loved ones and friends. Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. A. Edge. (Cedartown Standard, Thursday, October 24, 1918)
