Notes for John Ellis:
The Ellis family is said to be of Welsh extraction, and this line can be traced to John Ellis, who settled on Peter's Creek, a branch of Tuckahoe Creek, in Henrico County, VA. John was born in 1661, and he appears at Varina, the county seat of Henrico, October 1, 1683. His wife was named Susannah, possibly Royall, and their children were John, William, Thomas, Henry, James, Joseph, Mary, and Charles. [copied from pg. 460-461, an appendex of a book. the pages sent to me by Lou Hudson Pellican]

There is a question as to the father of John Ellis. Major Harry Alexander Davis in 1926 (related to Powhaten Ellis) who did extensive research on the Ellis family of Virginia to supplement Thomas Harding Ellis' first draft of the History of the Ellis Family written in 1849 stated "David Ellis appears to have been the first of the name Ellis to emigrate to the Jamestown Colony, comming in the second supply from England." "John Ellis of Tuckahoe was the son of David Ellis of Jamestown."

Colonel Thomas Harding Ellis did not make that claim, and begins his Memorial with John Ellis, one of the grantees of the second charter of the Virginia Company, and himself, according to Col. Thomas Ellis, an emigrant.
